Taboo - i have a domain name question

Some domains that were sold recently:

shoppinghome.com -------------- 580.00
cina.net -------------- 1,250.00
interhost.net -------------- 1,200.00
Macau.pro -------------- 1,900.00
Kadoink.com -------------- 500.00
ipetsupply.com -------------- 999.00
allstarmarketing.com-------------- 3,900.00
showid.com -------------- 1,500.00
christmasshopper.com -------------- 1,750.00
CareerUp.com -------------- $2,500
dxnews.com -------------- $1,000
let.com -------------- $15,000
outserve.com -------------- $500
racingderby.com -------------- $1,300
mdvitamins.com -------------- $750
pokerforums.net -------------- $7,000
visacard.info -------------- $1000
AfroCupid.com -------------- 490.00
gaycupid.com -------------- 750.00
LatinCupid.com -------------- 10,000.00
christiancupid.com -------------- 12,000.00

Most of these domains that were sold for the above prizes i wouldnt even pick up for 8 dollars at godaddy if they were available.

This shit keeps amazing me.

My question is: Is there really a secret and the people who owned these domains know the secret or are these just people who buy random worthless names and simply are lucky some company picks them up because they have no clue and too much money?

Thanks.

The answer to your question is mixed: Some know what they are doing, others do not... but still manage to get lucky every now and then.

:) So do not give up with your domain name search (or sales), you might just find a good one (domain or buyer)!

Triple 6 11-08-2005 01:44 PM

could be people bidding on their own shit, to attract attention and jack up the price of an otherwise shitty domain. It happens alllllllll the time on ebay, i wouldnt be surprised if its rampant on afternic, etc

dropped9 11-08-2005 01:45 PM

good thread dude......

dakota1358 11-08-2005 02:00 PM

Maybe you don't like that name but apparently someone does. Its all in what someone wants and what they think they can do with it.Hell maybe I could get hotblondebabeswhowanttolickmyballsandticklemyasswh ilefingeringthemselves.com and sell it for a few thousand

pornguy 11-08-2005 02:46 PM

It is funny. I would think that let.com would have gone for a lot more.

If you're going to lift data from my site: http://www.DomainNews.com, please credit us. Thanks. It's no big deal, but I set up the new site because many of my former thread readers begged me to launch it after the other thread was LOCKED yesterday.

I no longer post domain sales info on GFY because the MODS made it clear. If you want me to answer your question, email me. Plus keep in mind, let people know where you found the info if you're going to to a cut & paste. :thumbsup

quick answer to your question: There is no secret... mix of luck, trendwatching and vision. As I mentioned on http://www.DomainNews.com, an Australian Dating company is buying up certain domains with certain keywords and gave a few pointers to help domainers maximize/monetize any domains they have or may register to match that company's needs.

You can send me Qs on DomainNews.com and I will answer as many as I can on that site. If anyone wants to know what happened to the original megathread and why it was closed, look at my sig for gfy links.

Franck, thanks for checking out my site :thumbsup

yes, considering it's alternate meanings and shortness.

Well first of all i didnt just want to steal from your site. Honestly i thought i was general info listed on 300 sites. Im sorry.
I might send you a few questions on domainnews then. Im not in the domain game but it kinda facinastes me i have to say some things are totally unclear to me and it pisses me off hence my question.

"There is no secret... mix of luck, trendwatching and vision."

I got it. Still that doesnt tell me much. I would still not pick up most of the names mentioned above. Im not asking, just making a statement. Why those names, there are a zillion "useles" names you can pick up you know. I also dont understand those companies. Ok sometimes youre really after a specific name but often you easily can replace it with a similar name thats free to grab of godaddy for 8 bucks. Saves you a few k...know what i mean.

nah, don't worry about it... no ill will. I just compile from multiple international sites (all of sedo), aft, etc and sometimes aft/sedo remove a listing real quick if it's a mistake or needs to go private but my datastreams catch it all.

i.e. my sold page just updated again.

got 3 interveiws lined up and like I said earlier, I have no problm answering whatever I can. To answer your main question. you never know what a domain will be worth... highs, low, market moves, trends start and end everyday... last week I read a news article about a new trend, so I reg'd a few domains and already got an offer to buy, but it wasn't much, but it was something. :1orglaugh but that's just an example... keep your eyes/ears open and sometimes take leaps of faith. but of course we are talking about how all the "crap" domains are selling... we don't need to discuss the generic/type-in domains.

good luck. email me.

phonesex 11-08-2005 03:48 PM

May not be worth it to you, but the domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. When you go to an expensive department store and see an item where you go, "Shit I would never pay that for that!" Well, some people do.
