Anyone know about Astronomy?

I was searchin' google real quick and couldn't find this out...figured you guys might know. Which planet is closer to the Earth: Mars or Venus?

NetRodent 11-16-2005 11:59 PM

Depends on where each Mars, Venus and Earth are in their orbits.

Venus orbits the sun at about 68 million miles.
Earth orbits the sun at about 93 million miles.
Mars orbits the sun at about 140 million miles.

so as they move along their orbits the distance between them is constantly changing?

Venus has been pretty brilliant as the evening star here, very nice.

Mars and the Moon were real close two days ago, that was a pretty picture too. Mars is getting dimmer fast, it's moving away from us pretty quickly now.

i went to the store about 10pm tonite and I looked straight up and i saw an almost full moon with mars off to the right of it. you're right, it looks a lot dimmer than it was a few weeks ago...
