Wikipedia adopts nofollow tags...

Apparantly because of all the time spent stopping link spammers, Wikipedia is using nofollow tags across the whole site...

Interesting quote:

What happens as a consequence, in my opinion, is that Wikipedia gets valuable backlinks from all over the web, in huge quantity, and of huge importance ? normal links, not "nofollow" links; this is what makes Wikipedia rank so well ? but as of now, they're not giving any of this back.

Juilan 01-22-2007 02:34 PM

All the mainstream sites that made relevant links with them now get hosed. nice.

StuartD 01-22-2007 02:36 PM

I can undertsand, everyone and their dogs want links FROM wikipedia because of their PR....

but on the other hand, that's just not fair.

GhazAllOva 01-22-2007 02:36 PM

I'm sure they had their hands full with link spammers. This was probably the only way they could continue without anything drastic. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out for them. Will people stop linking to Wikipedia now?

starpimps 01-22-2007 02:37 PM

thats sucks, they just killed alot of legit people

edgeprod 01-22-2007 02:41 PM

*shrug* so pull your links TO the Wikipedia. Fair is fair.

In one simple word, yes. I just removed most of the ones I've had up for years with some mainstream sites I run after I found out about this last night. :2 cents:

More Booze 01-22-2007 03:55 PM

But the traffic will still be there. ;)

DaddyHalbucks 01-22-2007 04:09 PM

Come on guys, think about this.

Try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine the enormity of their spam problem.

RawAlex 01-22-2007 04:12 PM

Just do the same... when you link to wikipedia, make them nofollow as well.

Chio 01-22-2007 04:14 PM

No follow won't really matter much unless they get the word out. Most spammers will just keep going without even realizing it's doing nothing for them. So not sure how it's really going to help them stem it.

Wiki does send an enormous amount of traffic too which thankfully won't be effected.

madawgz 01-22-2007 04:17 PM

wow that really sucks :\

just a punk 01-22-2007 04:21 PM

Big changes in SE traffic flow are coming...

Splum 01-22-2007 04:37 PM

What a great business model they have:

1. Get dumbass sheeple users to write content
2. Beg like a bitch for "funds" to continue running the site
3. Fuck all the writers and webmasters who added value content by nofollow'ing the links

Fucking brilliant.

Cash 01-22-2007 11:34 PM

So, don't link back to them, simple ...

Fucking brilliant.

Gotta agree there.

They went from being a pretty useful idea to whoring for traffic and having an "article" (read: page title with no content) for every possible search term. Now the site is worth millions and you can be sure the donors (read: saps) who gave cash won't see a penny back ... oh, and you're backlink is useless too.

Wiki's Credibility: zero

Manga1 01-22-2007 11:43 PM

What do you expect from a guy who got his start as a porn webmaster :pimp

Doctor Dre 01-23-2007 12:23 AM

I can totally understand... This is a non profit org... They don't have enough money to monitor all this shit.

chuvii 01-23-2007 01:34 AM

i like all these "one day that's happens" changes

spasmo 01-23-2007 01:38 AM

Don't forget their planned for-profit search engine that's going live this year.

:2 cents:

emthree 01-23-2007 04:15 AM
