It depends upon the source. but a good, targeted opt-in mailer should perform very well. Your best bet is to ask the seller what sites they've mailed for (if they've mailed for 30 teen sites you may want to include a tranny or mature site or something that list hasn't seen or has seen very little of to ensure not only a better click-through rate but a better covnersion rate. If they allow it, use a graphic mailer with pictures as this gets mroe attention than just a text message. If it's a newsletter type mailer, set up a landing page then a continue now button or copy of the tour on that page, this way the mailer doesn't have a long URL like http://www.yoursite.com/blah/mail/bl...63263627362736 type link, better to send it to something like www.yourdomain/com/mailer you can even just meta refresh the bounce page too. This can elimate the surfer who tries to copy/paste the url into their browser and cutting part of it off or type the url in their browser and making a typo.
You should also have some trust with the mailer. Some want flat rate and some prefer performance based. The performance based are generally the way to go the first time so you're not getting spammed to 1 million random aol email addresses and getting fucked. Although some mailers are leery of getting fucked over by you not paying them. So, do something to establish trust, possibly even a small flat rate then a bonus for each signup produced.
Hope that helps. If the list is properly maintained (remove requests honored, the surfer opted in somewhere, not just grabbed from AOL's member's directory) it's very productive traffic. You should also make sure the page you send them to loads extremely fast. This is good quality traffic, so you don't want to lose a bunch of sales due to a slow loading tour....
