First thing is, PR is assigned on page to page basis, it has nothing to do with PR of main domain.
If you mean just PR of main domain can affect the ranking of subdirectories in serps, then No .. if you mean overall trust and value of main domain affects thre ranking of subdirectories in serps, then Yes .. blogs hosted on blogspot are an example, many blogs rank higher than they would be, if they were hosted elsewhere.
