Fellow Canadians... 5% or 7% GST.. I'm conflicted...

Everyone else get their little purely political crap questionaire as to whether you support 5% or 7% GST???

I'm conflicted.. Obvioulsy 5% is "nicer", but the reality is that 7% was peachy fine for me as well... I'm over the whole "hate gst" thing.. I'm used to it.. 7% GST is a big reason we're doing better.. I was expecting them to take that money and start spending it to improve healthcare etc.. but of course.. in order to placate the idiot masses, they reduce the GST.. which means less money to spend on the things that need to be fixed up...

So which box will you be checking??

5% GST and the PST should be matched to it! As far as raising tax... corporate tax should be hiked... not on small corporations but on the big ones... Wal Mart... Exxon... the banks as they pull billions and should pay out BIG!

You'll notice a difference on bigger ticket items..minimum on regular purchases

That sort of thinking sounds good to the average person on the surface, but once you consider the reality of it it suddenly loses it's appeal. For one thing, let's say that huge corporation employs 10,000 people, they bring in 10 billion a year and are taxed at only 10%. (I'm just working in approximations here so bear with me)

That's a tax chunk of $1 Billion they pay to the government. Plus all those 10,000 employees each pay their 30 or 40% in taxes, I don't even want to try calculating all that.

Now suppose you tell that huge corporation that their tax rate next year will be 45% "Like it SHOULD be".... what do you suppose will happen? Sure they'll have to kick in 4 times what they paid last year, but I'm quite certain they'd have to, oh, close some stores? Maybe lay off a few thousand of those employees. Maybe divert future business development plans away from Canada and into other countries instead? Those so-called "tax breaks for big business" are there for a reason. They come with incentives for those corporations to reinvest back into this country to boost our economy.

And frankly, penalizing the wealthy for their success isn't the answer either. Most people earning decent money are more than willing to pay their fair share but when 5% of the population are paying 90% of the taxes well, there's something wrong.

If you can afford big ticket items then that 2% really won't hurt anyway. seriously.. Every $1000 you spend that actually gets the GST applied to it is only a $20 freakin bucks difference.

5% is good. You'll notice it on big ticket items, buying a car, trips, etc. That 2% makes a large difference.

Yeah well a double double is only $1.71 now instead of $1.72... considering I go there about 40 times a month that's REAL SAVINGS DAMMIT!

Canada has a budgetary surplus .

Reducing the gst helps to prevent inflation and increase the spending power of the mass ( isn'it what the USA just propose, but them with borrowed money ? ).

As long as our Conservative gov doesn't try to get on " We police the world " bandwagon, we will be fine ....

I'd rather that they do a bigger cut to personal income tax. I would have rather had that than a cut to the GST.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????

Ever buy a house? the cut from 7% to 6% put almost $5000 back in my pocket.

Bryan G 02-08-2008 09:34 AM

They should have left it at 7%, I know it makes a diffence when buying big items such as a house. However, everyone was used to paying 7% so they should have left it
