Are there any full service gas stations left?

As I was filling out the loan application to get enough to cover a tank of gas and while busy running a squeegee over my windows, I wondered how came we don't have full service gas stations anymore...

Everything has gone to self service. That means we not only pump our own gas now, but also clean our own windows, check our own oil, etc.

As much as it would be nice to go back to those times, imagine the gas prices then.,..they can barely hire people to adequately work the cash register these days muchless be allowed to perform a service like cleaning windows or pumping gas....

We have lots of full serve in Canada still. Most stations have a Self serve side and a full serve side for a few cents a litre more.

HotMeghan_GL 05-14-2008 01:36 PM

everything in new jersey is still full service because it's illegal to pump your own gas there! also, i've noticed some parts of suburban philadelphia have a lot of full service gas stations, especially in the wealthier areas.

Last one I ran across was in Stuart, FL about 10 years ago.

After Shock Media 05-14-2008 01:36 PM

In Oregon your not allowed to pump your own gas.

They flip the fuck out if you even try. Gas is cheaper there then here, go figure.
BTW sucks even more cause do you know how fucking much of a pain in the ass it is to get out and pump your gas in a chair. Sure there are some other useless laws in place for it that do not work but still.

So I do end up using the full service Chevron we have here which adds 35 cents a gallon to the regular unleaded at already FU high Chevron prices seen at non full service locations.

Can't pump your own gas in Oregon, something silly like wanting to provide jobs for their residents or something stupid like that.

CherryLipsRosa 05-14-2008 01:46 PM

In all Costa Rica you have full service stations.

Brother Bilo 05-14-2008 01:47 PM

I grew up there in Vancouver and it used to trip me out when I would drive down to my aunts house and need gas, they do flip out if you try and do it yourself. One guy in Lake Oswego almost slammed my leg in the dog when I was trying to get out.

OMG Jim 05-14-2008 02:30 PM

I can only think of two full serve gas stations in the Atlanta area and I think the reason is because they charge about $.30 per gallon more for the "service".

Back in the day when gas was under $1.00 a gallon the majority of gas stations were full service but with the prices these days....

i love Oregon for their full service stations among other things

BradM 05-14-2008 02:42 PM

I got out of my car during my 2 hour trip through Oregon to fill up. I lifted the nozzle and some fat guy come running full speed towards me as if he was going to kill me, so I pointed the nozzle towards him and kind of froze. He said 'YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!!!!!'

I just looked at him completely perplexed and said "What?" and he said I can not pump my gas, it's a law. I just sort of laughed and assumed he was a crazy and tried to go back to filling my car up. He grabbed the nozzle and said "I HAVE TO DO THIS!!!!"

So I just got in my car and took the fuck off to the next station and let them do it.

Fucking weird to say the least.

I always liked the ski bunnies when I was in Oregon...

HairToStay 05-14-2008 02:47 PM

We have a few full serve stations around here and one will clean your windshield. That one, however, it not a name brand station and I learned the hard way that they use very, very cheap gas.

Dieseling and pinging for days until it was out of my system. NEVER again.

I remember when I moved to New Hampshire and on the way up there I stopped for gas. The guy came out, put the nozzle in the car, came over and said, "can I check your oil?" and I said, "why?" as no one had asked me that in years!

docputer 05-14-2008 03:04 PM

Here the BP stations have a single full service pump

rowan 05-14-2008 04:13 PM

Last time (probably the only time?) someone offered to pump my gas was when I filled up in a rural town. In the metro areas, in Melbourne Australia anyway, it's all self-serve.

viencarl 05-15-2008 04:19 AM

Does Coquitlam, BC still have the full-serve only bylaw?

Anyway it's kinda nice and old-school down here in Costa Rica where they'll pump your gas, check your oil and radiator fluid and car tire pressure for a tip... not quite the 1955 scene from Back to the Future, but still good.

WiredGuy 05-15-2008 08:51 AM

In most places here there isn't even a cash register, its all prepaid via credit/debit card at the pump so you don't need to interact with the cashier.

brings back memories as a kid all the gas stations were also service stations - usually two bay garages where the owner was also a mechanic and high school boys worked the pumps. it was actually kind of a status thing to have a job at one of the stations.

by the time i was old enough to get an after school job most had been converted to just gas stations with the little convenience stores or just a cashier booth.

Tom_PM 05-15-2008 09:11 AM

Yeah around here I dont know of any. All of them have the pumps with the credit card reader in em. I honestly can't remember the last time anyone but me pumped gas into my car.. holy crap. I dont think ever.
I think making a law is an interesting idea. It sure seems it would create a few jobs, but could also cause some to close up who barely scrape by as it is.

SykkBoy 05-15-2008 09:31 AM

Hmmm, maybe I should open a truly full service gas station...complete with bikini-clad gas pump girls and a stripper pole between each set of tanks...

No insurance company will take that on, that's a disasterous accident waiting to happen. I'm picturing huge explosions within a few hours of going in business, lol.

Yep :1orglaugh

Spyce 05-15-2008 10:42 AM

I live in Oregon and haven't pumped gas in years, except for when we travel out of state - then it's like a novelty and we argue over who gets to pump the gas. :-)

rowan 05-15-2008 11:13 AM

Do most USA-based self serve stations have pumps where you can walk away while it's refilling? Never seen one in Australia, not sure I'd want to either... people can't be bothered holding a trigger for 45 seconds?

IllTestYourGirls 05-15-2008 11:53 AM

more and more self serve are popping up. :disgust

As far as I know...all of them have those little clips that hold the lever in place while you walk around and clean your windows and such...and avoid having your hands smell like gasoline all day....

Ya sorry, that's Vancouver, WA, not BC. I get it all the time. It's a suburb of Portland.

LAJ 05-15-2008 01:27 PM

I went to a gas station and as I was getting ready to fill up, some woman asked me if I wanted to check HER oil for $50. She didn't look like an employee and I didn't see her car... does that qualify as full service?

Kudles 05-15-2008 02:17 PM

There's only one I know of in Sacramento. I wish there were more of those around!
