Need a large new monitor for my Mac - only experienced answers please

Hi,

I have a G5 tower and my 21" screen is getting too small. What do you guys recommend for a large one (maybe 30") without the cost of the Apple display, or is the Apple display worth the dough?

Thanks, Mitch

I have the 24 inch Dell. It's great, but I really could not imagine going any larger. I think that would be too much.

The Mac Screens are the best that you can buy. But they are very expensive.,,

I am also on a G5 tower and I have two of the 24" Apple Cine Displays (bought them as refurbished on the Apple site). They are absolutely worth it.

Mitch go to Radioshack.... the 14" would look awesome on your desk ;-)

Call me....

I don't think it is gonna be better if you make it larger. I would prefer the current monitor.

For the very best colour, get Eizo. Apple is overpriced. If you must have Apple, wait till early next year for it to be updated with the new version. Dell is also nice.

All mine are Samsung. Pick a couple contenders and then google for reviews.

Hi,

You sound like you know what you are talking about. What would you recommend that is compatible to the apple display in quality? I am not a graphic designer but do want a nice big screen.

deniska 09-30-2008 11:01 PM

Get the apple 30" and one is not enough I would go for at least 2.

sometimes bigger isn't better if your looking for larger text, I have a 24" syncmaster running 1920 x 1200 native and text is a touch too small for me

i find myself getting too close to the screen and moving my head around too much

i deal because the extra real estate is great for photoshop work and rubbing one out

but i prefer to do all my other work on my laptop

definitely test it out first

the big screens really are great for spotting the cross sales way down low without scrolling :-)

get another 21 inch to match.

Thurbs 09-30-2008 11:20 PM

I have the 30" apple display at the office.

Denis from ISPRIME is right as usual, one is not enough, going to pick up a few more 30's this week.

Best display, worth every penny.

Hi,

Sounds good but I was told by someone awhile ago that the monitor is made by another company and packaged in an Apple casing for much more money..... true?

KillerK 09-30-2008 11:57 PM

You should get 2 of the Gateway 30's

perhaps the actual LCD itself is, rare that monitor makers make the LCD from end to end. but the case, the buttons, the look, the power cable break off box is top notch. build quality of the whole thing is great.

some of the ISPRIME guys do have dell 30's but they always say the apple one is the best too :thumbsup

If you care about quality get an IPS panel. I haven't checked recently but the Apple 30 inch is the exact same panel as the Dell 30 inch. They probably updated the panel inside those over the years so it may not be the same anymore. But after checking here it looks like they are both still IPS panels.

The different panel types can make a world of difference imo. So if you really care about which one you buy check out lcdresource.com buyers guide.

Thats right we have a few systems running with dual 30's. I hear the new model Dell 30" screen is awesome as well. Its more money then the apple.

They also have a lower end version of the 30" display.

I have the Sony 24", Dell 30" and Cinema 30". The Dell has better picture quality on the Mac but you will have color workflow nightmares if you try to use it with Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom, etc. I spent over 80 hours trying to get things to look the same in Aperture as the JPG that it saves out. I eventually gave up and got the Cinema and instantly my workflow problems went away. I've had tons of graphic professionals tell me I just didn't have things set up correctly but I am fairly certain there is no way to get the Dell to work correctly with color managed applications. For the browser and general usage it is superior, but if you do a lot of stuff with photos or videos editing I recommend you spend the extra money on the Cinema. Yes, it sucks but that's Apple for you.

The Dell is cheaper and a superior monitor but it won't display colors correctly in color managed apps no matter what you do.

I have a Samsung 30 inch screen attached to my Mac Pro and it's working wonderfully. Got it off newegg earlier this year.

but it's not that sexy metal finish we all love =p

I got one of those mini digital converters for like 12$ and I can plug my macbook into any monitor or my TV, they all look great. When you buy the apple you're paying for design/trademark. If you don't care about everything having an apple on it, then just buy what makes sense to you.

Or the wonderful stand that doesn't adjust that forces you to basically hack your desk apart in order to get it at the proper eye level. ;)

Thanks for all of the insight guys. I do love the look and functionality of all Apple products so I am sure the monitor will be no Different. Plus, I do not think I can look at something on my desk everyday that says Dell on it. :-)
