does anyone run or own an ostrich farm

Would it make sense to buy ostriches and sell the meat to consumers and the feathers for pillows or would it be better if I kept them alive and just sold the eggs to be fried for breakfast

The Duck 10-20-2008 04:44 PM

Eat the meat?! OMG save the ostriches

Eggs are renewable so I think that would be the best route.

My parents actaully ran an ostrich bird store... they ended up with a bunch of screaming birds. SHITTY

One of my best friend's parents raise Ostrich. They are mean fuckers that is for sure. They pretty much just sell the eggs and feathers and stuff and they also sell birds to other farmers, but there is a pretty big market for the meat. I've had it a few times, it is pretty good.

Yes people eat it, though it typically is Emu and not ostriches. They do look alike.
I would bypass both if I had the space and just hop on the buffalo production.

heard they are not that nice...take care do not let them peck your balls

ok for real when I lived over in South Africa we did eat ostrich meat which was dried and called ostrich biltong its similar to jerky but a lot drier and spicer. There were a lot of ostrich farms over there and they did use thier meat, eggs and feathers. And it is true they are mean fuckers. They were also used for racing by some of the dumb Afrikaners

Farming is not traditionally considered to be a business that is very scaleable, or that has good margins.

That is very true. My friend's parents have a decent amount of birds and it is basically just a second income for them, they couldn't live off the birds alone without doing a huge expansion.

the meat is dry and tastes like rubber, some people buy it because it's lean or out of curiousity

BFT3K 10-20-2008 09:18 PM

My cousin used to run an ostrich farm way back in the Middle Ages, but there were no ostriches. Acres and acres devoted to ostrich farming, and no ostriches. Waste of space really.

fuzzylogic 10-20-2008 09:36 PM

i love watching people stick their arm down an ostrich neck. thats talent.. on the bird.

I enjoyed Ostrich the times that I have had it. It was a bit beefy and very low fat.
