Best game system? Wii - XBox 360 - PS3? Which one?

I admit it, I'm late to the party. With the exception of one Christmas in 2005 when I hijacked my little cousins 360 and played Halo for 3 days straight, I have never played any of the new game systems. None of them.

I went cold turkey on video games in 2001 after I spent too many unwashed, unshaven days with pizza boxes stacked a foot high while playing Grand Theft Auto 1 and Metal Gear Solid on my PS2. I realized that I had a problem, I gave away my PS2 with the games and just stepped away for 7 full years.

Now, I am older and wiser so maybe, just maybe I'm ready to jump back into the world of platform games. Plus with the LCD big screens I have a feeling graphics are gonna look extra sick.

So, which one is better? the Wii - X Box 360 or Playstation 3?

WebairGerard 12-08-2008 05:05 PM

how you been bud?

Wii is pure fun. great party games too. they some cool serious games too like Resident Evil 4.

Xbox/PS3 for serious hard core gaming.

SilentKnight 12-08-2008 05:06 PM

I posted an identical thread not long ago - and we eventually decided on a wii system (the wifey plays it more than me...so I figured she'd enjoy the chick games more).

On a side note - around here at the local WalMart - all the wii consoles sell out within hours of getting stock...while the xbox and ps3 seem to stay on the shelves a lot more.

NaughtyRob 12-08-2008 05:39 PM

Depends what type of games you play, for Sports games I love 360, for fun games just to stick them in and play, the wii.

If you decide to go the PS3 route you really can't go wrong since it has a built in Blu Ray player.

Fresh 12-08-2008 05:44 PM

Wii is fun but for serious gaming get a PS3

As long as the Gran Turismo series is Sony exclusive, I wont even consider budging from the PS3 :D

Jason88 12-08-2008 05:51 PM

ps 3 for sure :)

I've been good G. Been enjoying the 70 degree weather out here. :winkwink:

When are you guys coming out this way?

Pornwolf 12-08-2008 05:58 PM

I like the blue ray option on the PS3

-BUT-

XBox has the Netflix High Definition movie option now so renting movies might just be a rare thing to do.

With that in mind, is the Blue Ray really enough to make the difference?

You're correct on the Wii. It's like nothing else. No other gaming system has ever compared to the Wii. The features and ability of the Wii, make it like nothing else. And no other platform can do what it can.

This is where you went astray. A PC is for serious hard core gaming. :thumbsup

DefaultMan 12-08-2008 06:07 PM

If you were a fan of Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 and 2 then you have to get a PS3 and play MGS4...it's AMAZING.

Plus PS3 is a Blu-Ray movie player.

IllTestYourGirls 12-08-2008 06:25 PM

I bought a Wii for family fun.

notoldschool 12-08-2008 06:26 PM

Go with Xbox360. Playstation is garbage and who nees blue ray. Xbox has all the games and Live cant be touched.

tammix 12-08-2008 06:27 PM

none of the above... atari

Khulan 12-08-2008 06:34 PM

Have no idea about PS3 and Wii. I have been really enjoying Xbox 360

Pornwolf 12-08-2008 06:35 PM

Ok, I'm getting confused.

Is blue ray worth it or not?

Is the picture really that much different from an upconverted DVD?

Is Live worth it on shooting games (which is all I play)?

Are the graphics good enough on the shooting games on the Wii to be considered as my ONLY game system?

I'm only buying one. I want to make sure it's the right one.

Pornwolf 12-08-2008 06:36 PM

Oh, and here's possibly a deciding issue...

Does your average chick really like playing the Wii enough to consider it an entertainment must have?

alias 12-08-2008 06:40 PM

Get the ps3 it has free online features not like microsoft's where you have to buy cards or whatever.. You will like it for shooters too.

Blu-Ray is cool if you are gonna buy or especially rent a movie anyway might as well get it in HD.

Tons of free demos to check out on the playstation store too.

yes the blu ray movies you can tell big time. i have the ps3, its just like the 360 just different games. you can see details in the blu ray movies that you cant see in a normal dvd. if your into movies, then i'd go with the ps3 for sure, plus they are redoing FF7 for the ps3 sometime in the future :thumbsup

c-lo 12-08-2008 08:04 PM

Should have made a poll, man. I'm late to the party, too, but I'm thinking of picking up a Wii for my girl. If you're buying it partly for your girl you may want to consider simplicity of the controller. My girlfriend loves classic systems like Nintendo, SNES, and arcade games, so I think the Wii would be best fit if this is similar to your situation.

If I was buying just for myself I would go with the XBox just because of the price difference vs performance. I've played the XBox and PS3 on occasion and couldn't really tell that much of a difference in gameplay / rendering. (maybe I'm just not picky enough)

I hear that the PS3 renders distant objects better but haven't seen anything in person that convinces me that it is truly superior to the XBox.

All the systems seem to have a decent selection of games, but if you and your girl are going to play together, I would go with the Wii. If you don't plan to dedicate much time to playing / don't have a favorite series exclusive to one platform - go with the XBox.

If you plan to get into gaming as hardcore as before, go with the PS3.

That's just my long-winded, semi-inexperienced opinion.

Good luck and have fun. :thumbsup

Edit: Just noticed you said all you play is shooting games - then I would count out the Wii. Don't know if any of this helped, but in between PS3 and XBox I would choose XBox (and I've never strayed from the Playstation line)

Niktamer 12-08-2008 08:07 PM

PS3 all the way for me

btw my 40 gig is getting old so sponsors if you wonder what i want for christmas

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-08-2008 08:13 PM

Hands down Xbox 360

notoldschool 12-08-2008 08:34 PM

Dont base your pick on if a girl will play because most girls wont and who gives a shit anyways. Its about you and the xbox is the best choice for shooters on live its a must have. The difference of blue ray is minimul and a waste of time IMO. Who buys a gaming system to watch dvds? The games alone should make the choice easy.

April777 12-08-2008 09:15 PM

Being a girl, I love the Wii. Just a lot of fun, but not too serious. My husband loves the XBox for the sports games, but loves the playstation for the graphics.

yes. It's worth it. If you have a 40 -60 inch TV, you will see a huge difference -- especially on the newer movies and digital animation(Kung Fu Panda). Some of the older movies have good restorations also. The Godfather and The Thing looked better than I've ever been able to see them.

Don't believe anything you read about upconverting. It's bullshit, take it from someone who's been doing digital graphics for 14 years. There is no way to add information where it does not exist.

PornstarXS 12-09-2008 12:37 AM

get the xbox 360, cant be touched. my bro has ps3, over priced and games look better on xbox 360 anyways. i enjoyed COD4, halo3, gears of war, and gears of war 2 is sick. Gta 4 was amazing, i tried to play only 1 hour max got so much to do running my pay site. I've got to get my hands on the smackdown vs raw 2009, and want to try out prince of persia, and left for dead. there's a couple other great games like fallout 3, and dead space. i usually play games co-op with one of my brothers for a bit here and there, dont really go online otherwise i wouldnt get anything done.

and as for wii - never got into it. i dont want to be moving my arms about or breaking a sweat while i play games, i'd rather disappoint some chick in bed or workout at the gym.

i guess it all depends on what you are looking for. your best bet is go and rent each system for a couple of days

lol @ tammix atari, no! i had atari 800 xl

edgeprod 12-09-2008 12:45 AM

I own all three of them, and don't really play any of them with regularity. When I am looking for a casual experience with friends, I go for the Wii .. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't often have people over your house.

The PS3 is great because it has a "free" online experience, so you aren't paying every month for something you aren't using.

I personally prefer the 360's controller, but that probably puts me in the minority. I feel that it has the best online experience also, and with the recent integration of Netflix, it'd be the clear choice for me if I ever bothered to play any of them, hehe.

grumpy 12-09-2008 02:27 AM

for diversity you need all three.

Yeah, but for productivity the fewer the better. I'm already diverse enough.

DamianJ 12-09-2008 03:17 AM

It depends what games you want to play...

Wii is good for party/family games

PS3 and Xbox are fairly similar, Xbox has a much wider range of games and is considerably cheaper.

I own a 360 and a PS3 - BUT I only bought the PS3 for Little Big Planet (which is glorious). I really can find NOT ONE OTHER game on the PS3 that is not on the 360 that I want to play.

So, it's really up to what games you wanna play.

- Jesus Christ - 12-09-2008 03:23 AM

No one has mentioned my favorite game system...

Princeton Cash - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-09-2008 03:37 AM

Up Converting and real Blu Ray are not even in the same galaxy

If you have a true 1080p TV ( not 1080i) then the most impressive thing you can show any chick is a movie on a large screen in true hi def

We also have all 3 and in all honesty... the wii is the weakest of the three. Its cool for something like 5 mins and then you realize its a waste

The PS3 on the other hand had games that are designed in true 1080p that will knock your socks off

Dead Space on a 73" HD :) every night

Get the PS3, get GH world tour and an extra guitar for when friends are over. :2 cents:

Bottom line... up converting is a complete joke as someone else said, there is no way to add data that does not exist

Emil 12-09-2008 04:18 AM

Wii doesn't have enough good games. Just a few titles from Nintendo, the rest is crap.

tranza 12-09-2008 04:38 AM

Well, I prefer XBOX because XBOX Live is better than PS3 Online system and I like XBOX graphics, really amazing, you can try playing DeadSpace on 73' HD as Princeton cash said, it's fucking amazing!

cheekycherry 12-09-2008 06:41 AM

I have all 3 so you can trust my opinion.

360, hands down.

WebairGerard 12-09-2008 08:19 AM

PW hit me up when can bud. You going to Vegas or xbiz awards?

alexchechs 12-09-2008 11:12 AM

The wife and I used to be Nintendo freaks. But we wanted something a bit beefier with more capabilities so we got a PS3. The BluRay option was a big thing to us too. Plus the games are excellent and the PSN is starting to pick up with alot of great downloadable content.

acctman 12-09-2008 11:15 AM

xbox 360 with Xbox Live wins hands down. more games to purchase, free downloadable game demos, netflix streaming, media center built in, ... trust me you won't get bored at all.

Pornwolf 12-09-2008 06:30 PM

I got a feeling I'm only going to buy maybe 10 games over a year or maybe even 2 years. .. unless I fall off the wagon again.

What are the must haves for the PS3 and XBox

I keep hearing Metal Gear Solid 4 is a must have... what else is hot?

Ninja_Pete 12-09-2008 08:25 PM

Xbox 360 ftw

all i play is gta4 but you can get that on ps3 or 360

ultimatebbwdotcom 12-09-2008 10:16 PM

360 hands down

Pornwolf 12-09-2008 10:55 PM

So far the X-Box folks seem to be dedicated.

But, the over 30 crowd seems to love the PS3's Blue Ray.

Is this a demographic thing?

Hmm...

2MuchMark 12-09-2008 11:51 PM

I did my shopping and hands down the XBOX 360 was the best system. Graphics, sound and speed / frame rate are outstanding, especially on my 52" Plasma and THX sound system. The LIVE experience is great too. Downloads are fast, and there's always lots of new content and games to download and try / buy. Plus it syncs with my server for instant music and videos. What more could you want?

Violetta 12-10-2008 01:03 AM

xbox 360 for sure!

If you like fps games, go for
Call of Duty - Modern Warefare
Battlefield - Bad Company (Awsome online)

and Forza Motorsport2 if you like driving
GTA4 is also awsome!

Yngwie 12-10-2008 06:49 AM

well, if you want amazing graphics in HD the xbox 360 or ps3 is where to go since the wii is not HD at all.. 480p is the best you will get with it and no dolby digital. (composite video and regular rca plug for audio) The wii is technically is a whole other league. Personally, I would got the the 360. It had tons of good games, HD, dolby digital etc. etc.

Sure, the 360 doesn't have a blue ray player, but that doesn't make it a bad console. Many will say that the PS3 is much more powerful, but that's crap. My brother owns a ps3 and I've compared some of the games that are on both the 360 and ps3 and there's not a real difference graphically. The only thing different, like I mentioned, is the fact that the ps3 has a blue ray player.

I have my 360 doing 1080p on my 46 inch lcd tv using an hdmi cable.

I'm only buying one. I want to make sure it's the right one.

There's not that much of a difference on upconverted dvds. There is some, but nothing amazing

Live makes the 360 even more fun

if you want great graphics the wii is not the way to go. It make look ok, but don't expect anything amazing. It will not do HD (480p max), will not do digital audio and has the power that the very first xbox had pretty much. The wii is not about the graphically intense gaming. It's more of a family fun type thing.
