I'm using windows 7 on laptop

Not a single problem with it in the 48 hours I've had it up now! runs about the same speed as XP, finds MORE wireless networks and actually looks pretty!

Some things are actually faster... I haven't quite figured out all the tweaks I want to use yet but its been fun looking around for things. This OS is certainly better than Vista and will be putting it on my Desktop to replace the Vista install as soon as windows 7 is released! I also have windows server 2008 on the desktop. With some work windows server is basically a far more stable and faster version of Vista but it just takes some work to make it good for a desktop.

My laptop is by no means a netbook. Its using a core CPU (not core 2) with 2Gb RAM, 60Gb 7200RPM drive and is a dell E1705 that has served me well over the years I've had it and haven't felt a need to replace it (replaced battery and keyboard twice now)

candyflip 12-31-2008 09:14 AM

I downloaded the most recent build and have a box sitting here ready to give it a go.

Was just waiting for someone else's feedback before installing.

Here goes nothing...

seeandsee 12-31-2008 10:00 AM

what build do you run?

Dvae 12-31-2008 10:17 AM

Windows 7 is just Vista re-packaged. Remember the MS commecials a few months back?

Jarmusch 12-31-2008 10:19 AM

So it has lower system requirements than Vista?

No, it's the replacement for Millenium....er, I mean Vista.

You are thinking of those stupid "Mohave Experiment" commercials where they trick people into using Vista

brassmonkey 12-31-2008 10:24 AM

well ok then

Close enough.
Seems like a Pepsi/Coke blind taste test to me. If they call it Win7 instead of Vista who is going to prove them wrong?

I haven't tested Win7 out yet. But ever since I have had this computer with Vista Ultimate...I have been desperately watching the Win 7 site and reading the testing lol

No, it isn't gonna be Vista. Microsoft has had a complete nightmare with this OS. Yes, some people are able to work with Vista and get it tweaked out and it runs great.

Others, like me, have spent way too many man hours trying to "fix" all the stupid stuff on it to get it to run...only to still have problems. My only guess is that different people have different software programs running, and/or different network configs (what a nightmare vista is for networking), etc.

Anyway, whether a person likes Vista or not...nobody can deny it has been a bigger PR nightmare than Millenium was. Too quirky. And most of the cool shit that they had in the Longhorn Beta of Vista was taken out because it didn't work right.

As I understand it, Win 7 is gonna be stripped of a lot of fat. And will be what Vista should have been: XP on steroids. At least I hope so.

hahmike 12-31-2008 10:45 AM

Screenshots?

How's the spyware issue? Maybe you could surf some warez sites and let us know how you get on. Or font sites, they're even worse for popup hell and spyware shit. :1orglaugh

I use XP and OS X, both have their advantages but all the virus shit is starting to piss me off, I'm spending too much cash on security software shit these days, on a personal machine freeware avg & hijack this is enough, but I have a business to protect... in that sense, OS X is way ahead of Windows. Obviously Microsoft know that they need to do something about this in their next version, and I'd like to see what they're going to come up with, but unfortunately I have no spare machine to be installing experimental shit on... :( Hopefully it won't be something that is good at first then useless after a few weeks when some leet hax0r group starts to upload exploit info and workarounds...

So, will everyone who bought Vista get a Free Upgrade to 7 as a "We're Sorry we sold you total garbage!" gesture?

I have a bad feeling that Vista is actually just the means to get us to all buy Windows 7

I know it sure worked on me. The minute Win 7 comes out I'll be buying it to get rid of Vista lol

Mac OS X.
I'm just sayin.

Because whatever you call it, this isn't fucking Vista.

Unlike a soft drink it is easy to see what is under the hood.

Early tests are promising

Jesus! Take a chill pill! The link you posted proves nothing.
The only people who know are the people who did whatever to it and now refer to it as Win7. Face it you are just part of another failed experiment with MS.

Kinda sad when people have to get so happy over a computer actually working and doing what its supposed to :1orglaugh

Mac>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Windows

Tony, I run OSX on an HP computer I picked up at Circuit City on a whim.

That little netbook you have is capable of running it too. Lots of people already doing it.

Even on unsupported hardware, when it's up and running it just runs. Like always.

I got Win7 from the torrents, so can't help you out there man. :winkwink:

Exactly my feeling. When you run a business, time is money and the amount of money I've thus wasted trying to get Vista fixed every time it fucks up must be in five figures by now. I'm getting Win 7 the minute it's out - it simply cannot be any worse than Vista.

Just buy a Mac and save yourself alot of time, money and stress :thumbsup

I was a PC/Windows fanboy until I made the switch 14 months ago. Never been happier, not a single problem with hardware or software.

farkedup 12-31-2008 06:47 PM

I'm using the brand new M1 Build 7000 that recently came out. I figured I'd wait until this release before diving in since previous builds had some things disabled.

I have used mac for 30 days as my main system back about 6-9mnths ago and so far windows 2008 is the best OS I've used. I spent over 30 days with ubuntu as my main OS too. Windows 2008 is a faster more secure Vista that takes some work to make it a workstation but if you know your shit its the fastest, most secure and most stable option from microsoft. Windows 7 will likely be better but with its BETA status I wouldn't suggest anybody use it for more than a playground.

I've always been of the opinion that Macs are just gimmicks. All the ipod/iphone bollocks has only strengthened my opinion. An MP3 player and a phone with Internet access - shit the fucking bed. There are plenty of alternative products that do the same job, some worse and some better. It's just all their damn marketing that brainwashes people into believing that their products are here to save the world from the evils of Microsoft etc.

Just my opinion of course - I'm sure plenty of people are happy with their Macs. My designer friends are always on at me to get one but the only two times I've tried using one I found it frustrating and both crashed within 30 minutes!! Don't think I'll be making the switch any time soon :winkwink:

Funny you guys say that, I am running on an old Dell Demension 3000 using WinXP, I rarely use my Mac iBook for the fact that my girlfriends douchebag little brother stepped on it not watching what he was doing and now theirs a big black splotch on the screen.

But I still prefer a Mac over Windows, I just really haven't justified a reason for paying $1200 for a new computer when the one I paid $500 for in 2004 is working just fine.

Sooner or later I'll upgrade to nothing but Macs, but until then, I'll continue to be that so called "fanboy" running windows.

or you could just go drop $400 on a Dell... Just days ago:

Dell Vostro 220 Slim Tower: Dual Core 2.4 Ghz, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVDRW, 20" Dell 2009WFP UltraSharp Widescreen LCD, Vista Home Basic $365

Sure its not a great computer but shit does PLENTY.. and is easy to upgrade. Obviously throw out that Vista install and eventually pop in a better processor and maybe snag a bigger faster hard drive for $100 right before you install XP on it.

OR build one... get whatever CPU is ~$200 and end up with a pretty nice box around $550 without a monitor.

I've had more problems with my Windows based computer with 512mb of ram, than I have with my Mac based computer with 64mb ram...

Not saying you don't have problems with Mac, it's just you don't have quite as MUCH problems as Windows.

thats an apples to ORANGES comparison

If you're running VISTA on 512Mb RAM you're INSANE. Windows hasn't run properly on only 512Mb RAM since win2k (ran pretty damn fine with 256Mb)

The Mac with 64Mb? Go ahead and try running the latest OS from apple on that... have fun LMAO

Another thing... Is quality of OEM machines... Things like HP's tend to use POS motherboards. Spend $100 on a quality motherboard from a company like Asus and it'll be far more stable than a cheapo board. Same with the RAM... cheap shit SUCKS

If you use higher quality components to build your PC your experience goes up considerably. Apple does use higher quality parts for the most part than HP uses in their low end PC's. I've also commonly found insanely underpowered power supplies in OEM machines.
