Why adult webmasters need laptop?

Let me explain you what are benefits of laptops for adult webmasters. There are quite few but most important part of whole story is to get more time for productive work. We found 8 good reasons why (if you know something else please write them here), so let?s start?

1. Stable configuration

Most laptops you can buy today are brand name, they are tested and mostly they work well for quite long periods. When you buy desktop computer in parts you need somebody with knowledge to put them together and after that there are chances that some compontents won?t work together. Brand name laptops usually have guarantee 2 or 3 years and for example HP, Toshiba and many others have support and guratantee available worldwide. Basically this allows you not to worry about hardware and technical stuff.

2. Integrated UPS

When you?re not on the road with laptop its battery is basically UPS for you. UPS which can provide you 2-3 hours of power. This feature is definitely not something to ignore. The thing is if you?re out of power your phone line isn?t (in case you have adsl router you?ll need mobile backup connection or switch to dailup modem connection) and you can keep working. You?ll definitely see how this is worth once you have something urgent to do but you can?t because they was power failure. Not to mention possible data loss and inability to use things like RAM disk due to same reasons (data loss).

3. Mobility

This is feature is pretty obvious but let me explain couple things. With laptop you?re not limited to 1 location, even if you?re not traveling anywhere you can go to other room or place where you?ll be more creative. With mobile Internet connection your working place is just limited with availability of mobile signal (of WiFi signal).

4. Data safety

Most of bussiness class laptops offer some utilites for data / disk encryption. There are software utilities for this functionality too, but those laptops have hardware which supports it and does not depend on CPU.

If you have a laptop with any porn on it setup a "porn" partition/drive and ENCRYPT IT if you are crossing a US border :2 cents:

Did you not see DirtyWhiteBoy's post about going through US customs?

Many lawyers are now telling their clients to encrypt sensitive material on the laptops or to not to have it on there at all when crossing the border.

I would actually suggest not only encrypting, but hiding the drive too.

collegeboobies 01-10-2009 12:01 PM

If you get used to the laptop you may never sit at your desk again.... anyone need to buy a desk and desktop PC?

Elli 01-10-2009 02:06 PM

I worked my first two years on a laptop alone. That Vaio and me had some good times :)

But now I just use the laptop when I travel. It's hard to justify getting an uber one when I only use it about 6 weeks out of the year, but... slow laptops piss me off so much!

starpimps 01-10-2009 02:12 PM

i have a 17 inch laptop connected to a 24 inch monitor using ultramon.

If your being cautious about it that is not enough and your just inviting trouble.

His reasoning is that they can search your laptop at will and are allowed to do so without a warrant. I was told by my attorney on how he interpreted the laws, they could also make me enter in any password or unencrypt something as well. If I refused or did not do it they could delay/detain me until I did or I surrendered the laptop or drive. Apparently if it was encrypted, I refused to unencrypt it - they could hold it and have it unencrypted themselves. Either way I would be out of the laptop or drive and or they would have access to everything on it.

What I have been doing though is this. I travel with a clean laptop. It has an operating system on it and not much else unless it is just generic nonsense. That is it. No encryption, no hidden drives, no partitions.
I access my email via gmail after I arrive or even at the airport. Nothing stored on my PC and no passwords I could be asked to enter as I do not have the auto login feature even turned on.
When I arrive somewhere I just connect to a server I have set up with a username and password I have no trouble remembering. Proceed to download my ghost copy of my drive. Install that. Wash and repeat. When I leave again it is a clean OS.
Also pretty religious about clearing cache and stuff due to casual browsing or access while waiting at airports and such.

No particular reason to be this cautious. I am not hiding anything illegal. I also pay all my taxes and such. Just do not wish to give anyone a reason to fuck with me or flag me in any fashion.

Sure it is.

Set up a hidden volume or even a hidden OS with truecrypt.

I hear ya.... i'm switching internet providers myself next month, and they ALWAYS want the technician to install antivirus this and firewall that, and I told them this time (last time they left my computer on the internet and got spyware infected by the time I got home) that I do not want them touching my computer under any circumstances. I told the sales lady to put a note for the installer that my computer will be powered off and password protected, and cannot be turned on without resetting the CMOS. They can leave their software on the desk and move along....

Same here as well, nothing to hide, but it creeps me out that someone I don't know can mucky muck through my computer.

Total bullshit. They can't make you give up your password. There is recent case involving exactly this scenario.

Also, the government is going to have one hell of a hard time cracking TrueCrypt. Can you come up with one example of anyone being able to crack their encryption? The customs agent at the border won't even know you have anything encrypted on your computer if you set it up right.

That is not a bad idea, but having to download everything would be a huge pain in the ass I imagine. You could install a "clean" main OS with TrueCrypt and completely hide your work OS.

It's not about doing illegal things. The government will shit list you just for having porn on your computer. Then you will probably be harassed anytime you enter the US. No thanks... :2 cents:

Just going off of what lawyer said when questioned about it last year before going to Costa Rica. If it has been ruled otherwise then great. Can they still hold your laptop and delay you if suspicious?

I have zero concerns about some customs official cracking shit. I do however think that no matter what I tried to use I am pretty damn sure if the government wanted it open they could open it.

Similiar, I have a new 17" Acer hooked to a 22" viewsonic.

Yet the majority of my work seems to get done on my trusty old Toshiba satelite laptop.

5. Faster operating system restore

Laptops usually come with preinstalled operating system like Windows XP or Vista. They have restore CD or DVD which allows you to restore system in case of problems or failure. In case you have separate external hard disk for your data OS restoring takes about 30 minutes in total with installation of all software tools you need. With desktop computers you would have to install OS, make restore CD yourself and test it.

6. Less noise

Desktop computers tend to make a lot of noise which can be irritating and can make you less creative. Webmastering (except video editing) is not load intensive so your main CPU fan on laptop will be mostly off.

7. Possibility to extend your desktop

All laptops allready have display and buying additional external (normal) monitor can be used for extending your work space, allowing you to have more tools open and working with. With additional monitor you can transform your laptop in normal desktop computer with big screen, normal keyboard and mouse. However all benefits listed above will still be here.

8. Power and space saving

If you?re hard working and have your fast big desktop computer turned on whole day you will have power costs which aren?t insignificant anymore. Specially during summer when they will make your working premises hotter. Laptops save space and do not need special furniture to place them. You definitely won?t place them on your floor (some people place their tower cases on floor which causes faster dust collection and possible overheating problems unless they clean them on regular basis). Mentioned overheating problem can cause hard disk failure and data loss. There are insignificant chances to get overheating problems with laptops.

Some of you could be worried about lower laptop performance. Well for webmastering Intel Core2Duos (event normal Core Duos) with clock 1.6Ghz - 2.0Ghz and 2GB ram will be definitely enough for 99% of all tasks you will be doing. Considering todays prices and how many good laptop brands are out there it?s pitty not to have all that benefits.

No longer will I have to choose between taking a crap or keep posting on GFY! ... amazing. ....

rowan 01-11-2009 01:17 AM

My #1 reason for NOT using a laptop for everday work would be its ergonomics. Staring downwards at the screen and pecking away on a smaller than usual keyboard where the keys hardly travel when pushed and have no feedback...

rowan 01-11-2009 01:19 AM

BTW I got my laptop in an insurance settlement when my ancient P133/32MB RAM/1GB HD was stolen... it's probably powered on less than a week each year. :1orglaugh

the Shemp 01-11-2009 01:47 AM

i hope we get more threads like this... maybe outlining the benefits of having a color monitor, or printer/scanner etc ...

In this case, they seize the laptop and keep for a few weeks to crack it and yes I know at least 3 people that had theirs seized at the border. Of course, after they got it back it back it was worthless, because who knows what kind of BS tracking software they put on it. :Oh crap
