The revamped (unofficial) GFY RSS feed.

Hi Guys,

I was bored as hell tonight, and decided to rebuild my old and ugly RSS feed I made for browsing FA&PD - and I actually did just that.

http://www.grouchyadmin.com/ip/up/Xc...feedreader.jpg

It now says who started the thread, gives the actual date the last post was made and the number of replies, and will actually show the last 100 posts. Oh, and it syndicates all public feeds now, too. Every 5 minutes, or when queried if it hasn't got a recent cache for it yet. Sorry, it won't 'peek' into articles; that'd get me banned for the amount of traffic caused.

How do you use it? Simple!

Point your favorite RSS feed reader to:
http://www.grouchyadmin.com/gfyrss.xml or http://www.grouchyadmin.com/gfyrss.xml?forum=26 for FA&PD.

Want to Visit Traffic Trades? It's as simple as:
http://www.grouchyadmin.com/gfyrss.xml?forum=31.

A quick and easy way to find the other forum IDs is to go to the front page and mouseover the links. Where you see 'f=xx', that number is the number of that forum. If you specify an invalid forum, it'll tell you so in your RSS reader with a single article which tells you it's an invalid subforum (such as forum #1).

How do I read other forums?
This tool is specifically limited to working with GFY forums; it's not designed for, or to be used with anything else. In fact, I designed it to crap out if you try to make it read other forums - I'm offering this as a free tool for GFY, and GFY only.

Thank you. I decided to parse it into as close to a DOM as you can; before I was basically just doing some really strange regex; that's why I limited it to specific features and a single subforum before.

Now it does what I want (except for thread synopsis), but I don't even use it.

Just a heads' up on a request implemented awhile ago and I never bothered to post - I removed the HTML tags from the parsed titles, now. The proper way to pass them is encoded, but I don't like it, so it's been removed. Highbit and Unicode are still fine; just no tags.

This should also fix the minor issue with the feeds when someone does a copy/paste from Word and craps it up.

I got bored and decided to fix a few things again after doing some server cleanup.
  • To make life easier for GFY admins, I parse the URL for the thread, and removed the s (session) parameter automatically, since it would give every user that same session (which would then be invalidated) who used the feed.
  • Try to trap/rebuild all non-ASCII/UTF-8 locale data for better support, added href=self and ATOM DOM to header for better portability. Since many of these special symbols are cut-and-pasted, I can't always trap for them without munging valid text.
  • A few trivial speedups and local caching issues have been resolved.

ToDo:

Old threads on subforums without a lot of traffic sometimes give an improbable/impossible date. Right now I have it ditch and just use a null date. Eventually I want to be able to parse that - but I am dealing with a really messy HTML DOM for a service I don't even use. :pimp

Thanks GrouchyAdmin!

No match for "grouchyadmin.com" in the registrar database anymore.

peedy 05-04-2013 09:58 AM

Stopped working a few months ago. Looks like grouchy is MIA. If he doesn't want to, I'd host his script for gfyrss happily.
