anyone working with the AVCHD or P2 video codecs?

seems like the AVCHD codec is ahead of what any computer can handle, anyone have experience with this? would a quad-core i7 chip work better than 8-core xeon for editing?

researching a new HD cam and wanting the new panasonic hmc150 but it's AVCHD, i suppose i can get the hpx170 but it's more expensive plus the P2 cards are super expensive and don't hold much (16gig p2 card holds 40 minutes of vid at the setting i will shoot at)

thoughts? also, i use premiere pro cs3 which edits native P2, if i go with AVCHD, i'll have to bump to cs4 which has the all new workflow which i would have to learn.

what's the transition like from premiere pro cs3 to vegas? seems like vegas is pretty inexpensive, does it have the editing features one needs for complete editing?\

I've edited on everything and have training on the best AVID and quantum systems and if I've discovered anything its.... editing is all the same with just buttons in different places :) So there's not too much transition, I've actually found I can work faster in vegas then I can premiere
