I let one of my domains expire at Godaddy - how does the redemption period work?

I let a .com at godaddy expire and now I think I want it back. I don't feel strongly about it either way but I guess it is better to figure this out now before it happens again and I really care.

GoDaddy said I could have it back for $80. I said if I wasn't sure I wanted it back at $9 what makes you think I'll pay $80? That didn't get me very far. When does this stupid redemption period end? After that I suppose anyone that paid $20 for Godaddy's weird service that somehow lets to register names that have already been registered would get it? I'm not really sure how that works. Godaddy said they would not tell me if anyone had done that to my domain (that made me wonder, do they let multiple people do it for the same domain? That is shady as fuck). When will I finally get a crack at it for $9?

Thanks in advance.

Pick it up for $80, the next level is $200+

What domain was it? :)

Takes 30-45 days if I remember correctly for redemption period to end. Redemption period is just an extra little time period they add on so they can rape you on fees if you want to renew it.

Maybe a few months if no one else wants it you can get it

For expired .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, .US, .WS, .NAME, .CC, .TV, or .JOBS domain registrations, we hold your domain for approximately 42 days before cancelling it. Renewing a domain during this period is subject to applicable renewal and redemption fees.

Godaddy held one of mine for the $80 ransom and then put it up for auction within 28 days of expiring. Three people bid on it so I went ahead and gave them the $80. I'll sell it myself later.

You can't just login and get the domain back either, they made me do everything thru email.

i think, whatever you do, you shouldnt delay anymore

buy it for the 80, if you will not buy it and that domain has pr, traffic and is indexed in google, is possible that you will lost it cause someone will buy it and park it. those 42 days you still have chance to get it as previous owner, after that its free for everyone

i had one that was like 30 days or something. it only cost me the normal reg fee to get it back..

StaceyJo 02-24-2009 02:14 AM

I believe it 30days from the expiration date.

I've won auctions on domains from godaddy only to have the original domain owner reclaim it just before I was to take ownership control, so it seems possible that you could watch the auction on your own domain and see how that goes and possibly win that auction for much less than the $80 if it doesn't attract other bidders :2 cents:

I let it expire in late December and it is still "pending delete". wtf ?

Naphtansa 03-04-2009 01:54 PM

Don't know it depends on the registar I think ....for my part I would have paied the $80....

LiveDose 03-04-2009 01:59 PM

If it's 'pending delete' it will be available to register shortly.
