I'm starting a band

Ok, the time has come and it's needed to hit the rehearsal room again.

I have some material written (lyrics) in the stash, so I'll see if I can put together a team of guys, who can keep up with the lyrics.

I'll handle the bass and occasionally probably some vocals.

I have a singer already, he's a good guy and has a really death voice lol

I have a guitarist - he's terrible, but we'll try to start with something he can play, he has good morals, he will work hard and I like him.

Once we are good we might consider adding another guitarist to form a Thin Lizzy like duo.

I gotta get a drummer, that's gonna be a hard part, cause there's no good band that would have a lousy drummer, so he's gotta be good.

And I need to find a good guy, who will be ok playing with a bunch of nobodies.

I'll play bass with a crippled finger on the left hand, but I should be able to make it since it will be mainly my trademark lines and no Les Claypool shit.

What I would want it to sound ?

I don't know yet, I gotta see what we're able to put together, but it's gotta be real, it's gotta kick ass, and it's gotta be for people, it's gotta motivate, it's gotta speak clearly, it's gotta be worth identyfing with.

No Marijuana in the rehearsal, no bullshit, no super smart bullshit lyrics or shit, no overcomplicated music, straight to the point and kick ass, as much as possible.

The music has to have balls, it has to have heart, and it has to have brain!

Have fun dood, nothing liking getting some creativity out.

Reak AGV 03-16-2009 02:03 AM

Yeah I'm only worried about people.

I need dedicated guys who will live the music, I don't want to do anything lousy or half assed, I want it to have balls.

I don't care if the most we can do is to play a couple local clubs, but the concerts have to rock, the music has to rock, it's gotta blow you off like a bomb!

Might be if we start using a lot of buster with the guitar we can offset the low guitar skills!

:)

Yeah, but,

You know me I have over 2000 records, listen to all kinds of shit and am a perfectionist.

I mean, if I will play punk then it's gotta be at least "punk rock" that will have a lot of changes in the songs, different moods, a little bit creative structure and not that regular bullshit for 14 year old kids.

Like I could give a shit about solo skills but the team work has to be there.

Gasper 03-16-2009 02:20 AM

I'm in!!!!!!!

Even at this point I'm already living in a different world than the regular 9 - 5 worker.

But those very few friends I still call a real friend after all those years.

I know they won't go anywhere, we'll be drinking beer together and talk about bullshit as ever before.

The problem is totally different, if you're say successful (well fuck it I don't want to brag..) many people here embrace their backs to you, because you're "not like them" anymore and they're scared to face you - that's the deep culture of mediocrity here.

Well I never wanted to be the same as them.

d-null 03-16-2009 02:51 AM

always tough to find a good drummer :2 cents:

We had a great drummer back in the day when I played in a smaller shit hole town, where I used to go to the high school.

Then he started to smoke weed all day and became unreliable, plus he behaved like an idiot more often than not.

I guess he's doing some monkey job in Prague now, and he's definitely not the type that would fit into my vision.

I want to have the band in Brno where I spend weekends and I have a clear idea about the attitude the people should have.

We'll see how that works out, I'll try the drum machine if no one will happen to be ok till like month or so.

The Smashing Pumpkins also started with a drum machine.

My husband has played music for so many years I can't keep track anymore. We have been slowly building him up a small studio out here and I just never know what sounds are going to come out of that building out there. lol

Here is what I would suggest, and I am by NO means a professional, nor is he, or they..... they just jam and have fun with it. But anyway, get together, have a few jam sessions, let everyone just play and gather their bearings on it all and let them play, soon enough you will find your sound for your band and it'll be a hit, rich and famous or not.

The worst thing to do is to play above one of your members or beneath them, or yourself.... just have fun with it, feel it, and don't push the style or anything, let it happen the way it happens.... that will be some of the best music you ever play.

As for Drummers, good damn luck with that one, I had to give birth to their drummer, they all suck around here. lmao

My husband plays guitar as his instrument but can also play drums and bass pretty damn good and my oldest son plays drums and bass.... so they can pretty well melt into any situation.

BOTTOM line, let it flow and have fun with it, don't push any one sound just yet when you are starting. That is where THEY do their best and it works for them.

We have an office band, but at the moment use a drum machine like suggested.

John-ACWM 03-16-2009 12:14 PM

Some great thoughts.I like your determination. All the best with the band :thumbsup

tranza 03-16-2009 12:25 PM

This sounds nice...good luck with the band.

RevTKS69 03-16-2009 12:47 PM

Never been to Prague, so that probably rules out a jam session, but good luck on the band

Just remember, if the song isn't quite right...

...it needs more cowbell!

:winkwink:

Yeah, well I have two chances practically

a) is that I would talk an old friend of mine to play with us, he was a machine, he practiced like 8 hours a day while he was in the military service and he's more precise than a computer. He's a good friend of mine and he knows I am taking things seriously.

I don't know what's up with him though, haven't spoke to him in like 5 years.

b) I'll have to get lucky and find a young kid with his feet on the ground, that is practicing like crazy and looking for something real.

I'm also gonna have to start buying the bass player magazine again to keep in picture, I was not around for a long time.

Yeah, free your mind and the bass will follow, that's what they say.

But it needs a clear direction, otherwise, you're wasting time with too much bullshit.

Jamming is one thing, but rehearsing is nothing but a hard work and a duty.

If you want to hit the stage you need to be ready, you don't need to have talent but you need to have a will and persistence, and intensity.

LOL thanks

Btw. did I ever told you that, no matter what all I listen to, I respect George Michael as one of the most talented musicians to ever touch the pop music starlight in the 20th century?

Well, we did a couple of gigs with drum machines and they're no miracle solution.

They're perfect for jams since they are on time and don't complain like most drummers do. But for live gigs, they kill the energy level.

Ususally, when we play live, we play a little faster than reharsals and the energy and synergy is just up there. The drum machine will prevent that. :2 cents:

geedub 03-18-2009 06:36 AM

lol no marijuana, that probably cuts your options down quite a bit man.

Well I have only the worst experience with this.

Like I don't care if someone puffs one as far as he can play in rhytm and doesn't annoy the shit out of others or whatever, but once I see a first glimpse of the regular pothead lobotomy - he's fired.

CarlosTheGaucho 03-19-2009 02:11 AM

I just spoke to a friend of mine who's a serious shredder, he might be a guest on a couple shows for some cover songs.

We could actually start playing some covers, even if that will suck we can at least try to play something everyone knows already.
