Its getting an amazing amount of free publicity as I see it mentioned daily on radio/tv. It appears to be nothing more than micro blogging, but the viral effect has taken over and its the "in" thing to be doing right now.

I have no clue what twitter is. I checked it a few times because of the hype but so far all i see is random people posting stupid stuff. I'm sure i must be missing something but i have no clue what.

Honestly, I tried to be hooked on MySpace. I tried to be hooked on Facebook.... never did! Now I am trying again to be hooked on Twitter..... Not really hooked, no... Not like some people that "lives" on twitter........ But hey, still trying :1orglaugh

I totally don't get that site. Isn't just like broadcast text messages?

I can barely muster the concentration to listen to my own friends and family prattle on about their boring lives, let alone self obsessed celebrities or strangers.

But I assume one day someone will invent a social networking concept that will hook me and I'll look just as pathetic as everyone who is twittering now.

Its been around a LOOOONG time.

The owners of Twitter deserve their success. Obviously, viral type, social networking sites are all the rage right now. Twitter put their own spin on that genre and made it work.

I can sort of understand something coming out like this and getting hype in the media so a bunch of sheep in the public jump on the bandwagon, but it seems strange to me to read here at this supposed learned webmaster type crowd here on gfy getting on the same bandwagon..... I really don't get it

Everyone has ADHD, nothing is more perfect for this than a shitload of on the fly pointless ramblings that no one really has to think about to write or read.

Here's a hint about twitter for those of you that "dont get it" yet...

if you follow smart people that post insightful tweets you learn/discover things ahead of the pack. Having knowledge before your competitors is the key. And a good webmaster knows how to turn prior knowledge (finding out things before other webmasters) into $$$.

but hell, i am not going to try and talk you into seeing the benefits of twitter, it'd just be more competition for me :winkwink:

Ok, i'm not being sarcastic here, i just feel very stupid. Can someone tell me wtf it is.
All i see is some random text from god knows who. What is it supposed to do? Do i need to see other pages? Is there something else than random notes? I'm serious. I really don't understand it.

Twitter has no income. Built into my ps3. Pushed all over articles in newspapers and TV. I tried it out and think it is a piece of shit...

In the UK the turning point was about two months ago when suddenly the BBC decided every one of its big radio shows needed to be twittering...BOOM..now it is everywhere.

I am loving it with my mainstream sites especial. Plus, on my personal non-biz account I have had a weird one on one conversation going on between me and my favourite radio presenter for a month now. Kind of cool.

i still don't get it .. seems like a glorified instant message board .. am i missing something?

however i'm getting adds,daily ... now what?

What's amazing about is it shows how eager people are today to be popular, important, make money online.

years ago the internet used to be so much more innocent, people set up webrings and made sites just because they liked the subject, where users never even thought about the webmasters that were doing it to make money, now everyone knows that if they click on something that someone might be making money from it

what is it that you love in regards to using it with your mainstream sites? how do you envision the internet in the next year, are we supposed to have all of our sites fed through twitter now? kind of like rss? so far I'm like the others who can't see the draw to it, it just seems like a bunch of pointlessness packaged in a very unappealing way

It can be used as an auto spaming tool if you use it in conjuction with other websites like this one. http://www.tweetlater.com/ .....Once you get a decent amount of "followers" people for some reason will just keep "following" you The above site will send any new person that follows you an auto respond message with what ever you want to put in the message including website links.

This guy gets it. Judging from the proliferation of dating and porn niche profiles, Twitter is great for direct marketing.

I promote mainstream sites on Twitter and the key is to get your link read (and viralized) by 'influential' people. It's great!:thumbsup

This isn't their first 'great idea', the same guys who started twitter also were the boys who sold 'blogger' to google.

I still don't understand the goal of that though.... obviously many people "follow" 100's of people, they probably don't have time or care to read 99% of it, so what is the point of having all these no-mind pointless "followers"??

People get mocked to HELL if they update their facebook status more than once a day or once a week.. but Twitter people update every 10 seconds.. and it's ok.. it's crazy..

I first heard about it on CNN. Been hearing about it on CNN and every other tv/radio show ever since. Pretty easy to blow up with all the media and celebrity hype. It can probably be use for marketing and generate decent income source. Personally I don't get it. Text messaging? What do I care what the average joe or average celebrity is doing 24/7? Like somebody else said, the last thing I want to do is spend time reading two- sentence long boring drivel about others' lives.

When you say you have 1000 followers, are there actually 1000 people checking in and reading about the things you post? There are actually 1000 people reading several sentences you post every 10 seconds even though they don't know who you are? Who would do that?

On the flipside if a twitter user is following hundreds of people, how do they get any time to even check out what those 100 people are twittering?

I'm out of the loop. I honestly don't 'get it' at all.

I remember no one even knowing how to get their pictures put online. Back than everyone was just interested in trying to disrupt AOL's service with little hack programs. lol

You're marketers, don't be fooled by 'all the free marketing' they get. A large portion of the marketing that appears to be free, word of mouth on blogs, etc. is part of their marketing plan. They are a company with venture capital funding and are just like any other business with a marketing plan and a budget to go with it.

This works perfectly, though, because once the paid advertising and blog entries that look like word of mouth and genuine testimonials got the product out there and lead many to believe this was the next big thing and was IN, more and more people started doing free marketing for them.

Twitter now has a userbase of over 5 million people and i was reading a stat that they get at least 10,000 new signups daily. I rember when twitter first came out and I mentioned it on GFY, most people thought I had two heads or had totally lost it.. Amusing to see where it's at now.

And if you love twitter, you will love plurk.com too.

For sure. Same holds true for Youtube and Facebook. They had a ton of venture capital behind them to propel them to brand names overnight. While I see the utility of Youtube and Facebook, Twitter seems less clear. I guess it's like facebook but more real-time? Perhaps it's great if you're trying to get ahold of somebody or to meet up, in virtual real-time, if you don't have other means of contact - you might know where they are, or plan to be, by checking out their twitter.

But I'm probably oldschool. Maybe in this day in age people want to follow the goings-on in others' lives, including anonymous strangers, on a minute-to-minute basis.

For those of you that use it, what do you use it for other than marketing?

Make it so something has to be approved to see your posts and then no problem.
