This is my mother's new dog, she's 3 1/2 and completely crazy. She was crated for most of her time with her previous owner, she's going to need some training. Anyway, here's Nellie.

oh I absolutely adore bulldogs, don't have one myself, but definitely will get one in the next year or so. keep them coming!

Matt 26z 04-10-2009 12:39 AM

I'm thinking about getting a French Bulldog. They are like half the size of English Bulldogs.

There are also those mini Bulldogs, but being "designer dogs" they cost an arm and a leg.

Same here!

When my 13-year-old dog finally goes (God forbid), I think my next dog will be an English bulldog. They're absolutely adorable.

Great thread! I'm saving some of these photos.

:thumbsup

nooo, i didn't mean yours looks overweight, he looks great :thumbsup

on the contrary, i think mine is very small :1orglaugh
cos he's only 22kg (49 or 50lbs ??) and last time i was on the dog's show
the judge said he would be perfect size for a female dog but too small for a male :upsidedow

Great looking dogs was thinking about getting one in the near future. I previously owned a pit which I adore also but was looking into a dog that is a little more mellow. Just concerned about the health issues I hear about with the bulldogs

That is one of my concerns as well. Breathing, skin irritation, stuff like that. Maybe some of the long-time owners can pitch in. :thumbsup

bDok 04-10-2009 08:54 AM

bump for bulldogs. once I get a bigger place I'm getting one.

We have had little to no problems.
Maggie, and one of the puppies had Cherry Eye.
We just took one of the puppies to the vet, she had bumps on her skin and her right eye swelled closed. She was bit by a spider, so nothing major I guess.

and for the skin, you have to use more expensive shampoos, and a bath every couple weeks not once a week like most dogs. But you do have to clean thier faces (wrinkles)

Some skin problems come from the food you feed them, we feed ours a top brand known for bulldogs. $42-50 for 40lbs

Bulldogs are a Very Good pet, but you must learn a lot about them.

I just found this site last night

Breathing, They say bulldogs don't snore, thats not true all of ours do.
If you follow all the guidelines of bulldogs, breathing shouldn't be an issue.

Dog walks are short!
Bulldogs can not go outside for more than 5 minutes when the temp reaches 80+
We have a plastic pool that they love, and allows them to stay out longer.

Most bulldogs do not drool. We have a male that shoves his face in the water bowl, so yeah no kisses right after unless you want soaked.

Some times they can get a build up of flym (not sure how to spell that) and you have to get that out. I think we have done it 2 or 3 times total.

X37375787 04-10-2009 10:29 AM

Could it be that Bulldogs bred further down south are better with heat? Living in Florida, there is only few days in the year where the temperature drops below 80 during the day.

So your doggies still have problems with the heat, despite being born in the South?

Socks 04-10-2009 11:04 AM

Dalila, e-mailed you guys last night, mind checking on that for me?

As for bulldogs, my brother in law breeds them in Mexico... Can't say I'm a huge fan, don't really get the allure...

We only have one from the south, Dylan. The all white male.
He is just now 1 year old, as puppies they can handle it better.
So we will see this summer.
Don't think that because I said 80, they just kill over, ha.
that is the "SAFE" rule for bulldogs, since it is easy to forget them outside.
Our dogs have been outside for 30 minutes or more in heat of 90 or more.
the have a big childs wadding pool they pay in, that we on very hot days put Ice in.
They are just Very tired when they come in. the reason for the rule of heat is things can switch very fast when the Bulldog gets tired...

Bulldogs are 90% inside house dogs...
They Love the outside, but heck they cost to much to risk, ha
Our last, and first litter of pups sold for $2,500 each.

Im going to go set the pool up now, ha!

HAve a good day, and feel free to call me to talk about bulldogs if you wish

I have some issues with my bulldog -

1) he snores and .. farts :Oh crap (but not that terribly as I expected)
2) at age of 6 months he had a small eye surgery that is common for this breed
3) it's not a breed for jogging or very long walks.. (though mine likes walking especially when the weather is cool)
4) surprisingly, i almost don't have any proplems with skin irritation, allergies & drool
but I need to clean his face wrinkles from time to time.
5) transporting bulldogs in planes is very dangerous. so if i travel somewhere by plane i must leave him in dog's hotel.

my parents had a dalmation and my grandmother has german shepherds and
comparing to these breeds english bulldogs are more "problematic"
but bulldogs have so much character and personality!
