the burj is just plain fucking insane

Evil Chris 04-24-2009 11:34 AM

heh... it's ok.

Let's do it this way. What's the tallest building or stucture where you live?

CDSmith 04-24-2009 11:38 AM

Apparently by this September the Burj Dubai will become both the world's tallest building as well as the world's tallest freestanding structure.

Interesting.

PR_Sebas 04-24-2009 11:41 AM

CN Tower is always tallest in my heart.

DrChango 04-24-2009 11:41 AM

the city I live in has over million inhabitants, but the tallest building in town is less than 30 stories, and it is one of only a handful of structures that are over five stories. There was a law on the books (and some variants of it are still in place) to limit the height of buildings so as not to spoil people's views of the surrounding mountains...and now we sprawl across three times as much space as we should. Fucking foolishness.

That would be CanWest Global Place (formerly the TD Center) at Portage & Main.

It's only 420 feet high though. :D

Canada behind the US again! Canada you suck!

OMG Jim 04-24-2009 11:52 AM

The tallest building in Atlanta is the 55-story Bank of America Plaza, which rises 1,023 feet (312 m) and was completed in 1992. Surpassing everything outside of New York and Chicago it ranks as the 8th-tallest building in the country. The second-tallest building in the city and the state is the SunTrust Plaza, which rises 871 feet (265 m).

I really wish there was someone in Dubai tracking the work being done. I have seen a couple sites who make an attempt, but they are horrible.

A daily blog with hi res pics of the construction would be sweet. I know I would check it out regularly. There are dozens of high profile projects there to document, and probably dozens more we haven't seen yet.

Owner 04-24-2009 11:55 AM

Imagine that thing falling over..

Tiiimmmmmmbbberrrrrrr !!!! :1orglaugh

The one in Dubai is listed as being over 2600 ft, that's actually a 1/2 mile high, not 1/4.

We're bilinqual when it comes to temp, measurements, weights, distances etc.

Gotta know both when you live next to the only country stubborn enough to still be non-metric. Oh wait, there are THREE countries in the world that backwards, the other two being Liberia and some place called Myanmar.
