Anyone every accept a Money Order for a transaction?

I have a person who wants to buy our sailboat; he lives out of state and the only way he can pay is by money order. He told me once I receive the money order he will arrange for the sailboat to be picked up and he would pay me 20 bucks extra to hold it and remove my add from craigslists.

I don't know about removing my ad until I see he has purchased a money order. I assume the best way to prove he has purchased the money order is to scan it and email me or make a copy and fax it to me.

Has anyone ever sold something and accepted a money order?

Once the money order is purchased with my name on it, can he back out and cash the money order back in?

Is there anything I need to pay close attention to as far as possible scams?

It doesn't sound shady, but just wanted to check.
Never dealt with money orders, so thanks for the tips

Why do you say that?

Only way I'll take anything but cash from CL is if the property stays until the payment is verified and clears.

Let him FedEx you the M.O. and call to confirm with the issuer.

I wouldn't take down the ad until you have the M.O. in hand and make a call to verify it. Do not deposit the payment until you have verified it yourself.

Because it probably is.

Get a cashiers check rather than a money order. Take it to the bank it's issued from and verify it.

i'd take a wire in this case (i assume the sailboat is a big ticket item)

what kind of backwoods hick is this clown that he can't send you a wire like any other normal human being would do in a large transaction?

just looking out for you buddy!

If its for less than 700, a usps m.o. is as good as cash. I've sold tons of shit on ebay over years and have had a bunch of m.o's with no problems. Tell him to save the 20 bucks and use it to send you a fedex with it. You can take it right to the post office and cash it there immediately. I would'nt bother with any other m.o. than a usps one though.

I used to deal with money orders back in the day before paypal etc was very popular. Worked out good for small transactions over ebay etc. Hell I remember doing COD on some of my purchases back then.

I agree though for a big item like that just have them wire the money.

Thanks Aaron. I am waiting to hear back from this guy. I have asked him to wire money...we will see.
Funny thing, he offered to pay my asking price with out even seeing all the images I had of the boat. That threw up a red flag :thumbsup
Hell, you can only post 4 images in your add and I did not even show the inside of the boat because there is too much stuff that could be stolen.

Yes, it is a big ticket item and I won't let it go until I see some hard cash in my hand.

Thanks Easton, I appreciate it :winkwink:

I think I will stick with the 2 individuals that are coming by today to take a look at the boat. At least I can either one of them to the bank and do the money transaction there.

Way3 04-25-2009 08:53 AM

Nikki...glad you did your due diligence!!! Hope the boat sells for you today!!! Good Luck!!!

Nikki_Licks 04-25-2009 10:57 AM

Thanks, Chris. If she sells, then that would be nice. We are in no big hurry, but I thought this may be a good time to sell it with tax returns coming....you never know who has cash to spend :winkwink:
