The Ten Misquoted Lines In Hollywood Movies

Darth Vader's supposedly famous utterance "Luke, I am your father" has been voted the most misquoted movie line by film fans.

The poll from LOVEFiLM put Vader's comment from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back at the top of the list, with the movie villain actually saying, "No. I am your father," The Daily Telegraph reports.

Communications manager Darren Bignell said: "Iconic film lines are part of everyone's vocabulary these days, but it's interesting how years of quoting have had a Chinese whisper effect on accuracy."

The top ten misquotes were:

* "Luke, I am your father" - Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back
* "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
* "Do you feel lucky, punk?" - Dirty Harry
* "Play it again, Sam" - Casablanca
* "Hello, Clarice" - Silence of the Lambs
* "Beam me up, Scotty!" - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
* "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn" - Gone with the Wind
* "If you build it, they will come" - Field of Dreams
* "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto" - The Wizard of Oz
* "Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?" - The Graduate

In the original I believe it's "Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?".

That's what I wondered. You would think they would put the correct line next to the misquote.

I hate it when articles tell us that there's interesting trivia but don't tell us what the answers are.

AssPirate 05-12-2009 10:51 AM

LOL, I'm sorry. I just thought that it would make an interesting post. I guess we all need to check out IMDB.com

* "Do you feel lucky, punk?" - Dirty Harry
Actual line is "(you gotta ask yourself) do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

* "Play it again, Sam" - Casablanca
This one goes "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake."

* "Beam me up, Scotty!" - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Closest actual line was Kirk saying "Scotty, beam us up"

* "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn" - Gone with the Wind
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"

* "Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?" - The Graduate
Just saw this again a few months ago, it's "Mrs Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?"

i think the concept of misquoted is being overplayed here. Maybe there are not word for word accurate but who cares? It's the sentiment and the feeling the people are trying to evoke when using these famous lines that are now part of our culture.

True. Many of the misquotes actually have a better flow to them than the original lines. In most cases you can see where the misquote makes sense, or at least how it came to be.
