Lionel Richie - WTF?

i was a child when this song came out - i won this record, vinyl LP, at a birthday party when I was 12 or 13. i'm an old bastard now - and Lionel Richie hasn't aged a fucking day. Look at him, he's gotta be in his 60's and he looks the same. black people age better than caucasians but he's ridiculous.

Mutt 05-21-2009 03:55 PM

turns 60 June 20th.

60 is the new 40 if you're black and rich!

marcop 05-21-2009 03:59 PM

I love this song... from his time with the Commodores. I still have the sheet music (from 1977, I think).

stickyfingerz 05-21-2009 04:00 PM

Ill look 40 when I am 60 without plastic surgery lol

it's an incredible song - a modern standard. unfortunately most of what he recorded as a solo performer was complete dreck.

dyna mo 05-21-2009 04:21 PM

he did a great job on idol last nite.

We must be about the same age then.

I saw him on some news TV show a few weeks ago and I was thinking the same thing. He must have fallen into the fountain of youth.

I remember one of his songs from the mid 80's (Hello) had the worst music video with a blind girl scultping a bust of his head... weird in the worst way. And such a schmaltzy song. Ugh!

ha - that's one i was thinking of as complete dreck - somebody told me that the head looked more like Patrick Ewing of the Knicks than Lionel.

marcop 05-21-2009 04:37 PM

Hahaha... I just looked up the video, and the bust does look a lot like Patrick Ewing.

Supz 05-21-2009 04:54 PM

Hello is my favorite Lionel Richie jam. It will get you laid.

iseeyou 05-21-2009 10:25 PM

running with the night - epic song

Welcome to the Jungle came out in 1987. That means there was a whole 7 years prior to that in the 1980's. Some of us were alive back then and listening to the popular radio music of the day which was Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson and even Stevie Wonder. So, the parents that were giving our his records to pre-teens were probably thinking that he was mega popular with that age group at the time.

There could be worse people to have been popular in that age group. These days you would be hard pressed to find an 'artist' that appeals to that age group that can sing live let alone write an actual song.

hey now if you had said Michael jackson, that may be different, who didnt like THRILLER? Mom had the vinyl too... :winkwink:

however, Anthrax put out first album in 1984, and thats what I was listening to. I didnt listen to 80s music, I listened to Thrash./metal. In 84 is also when master of Puppets (Metallica) came out, no way i could listen to Lionel Ritchie after hearing Master of Puppets... metallica first album, 1981, and Kill em all (one of my fves) was 1983

Lionel was big at the same time as Michael with more or less the same audience.

I like Anthrax, etc but you would have to recognize that it wasn't common pre-teen listening. Heck, Prince, also big at the same time, was banned by a lot of parents because of Tipper Gore's campaign. Their heads would have blown up at actual metal.

I concede, you guys are correct, Lionel Ritchie rocks!

However, in regards to this, some momds burned KISS albums, my mom collected them.

Having a mom who was a big Alice Cooper fan set me apart from the other kids in catholic School lol she still likes him and she is no longer young!

i was able to collect what the other kids were banned from listening to, i was trading metal with people from other countries as collector before i was 15.

some black folk age like hell...it's Asians that tend to look the same age from their mid 20s until their mid 60s.

I think his appearance has more to do with being rich, which equals better diet and time to exercise, plus the occasional plastic surgery and not a lot of worrying himself sick wondering if he'll be making his mortgage payment

You will not find a bigger Metallica fan than me, so I wanted to correct you on your chronology ...

I saw Metallica in 1985 at the Maters of Rock Festival in Rio DeJaneiro before they were even signed to Elektra. They were not one of the headliners of the festival - but everybody was talking about this AMAZING garage band!!

Master of Puppets did not release until March 1986.

Ahh the 80's! There haven't been a better decade for music since IMHO. Whether you like pop or rock or metal, that time was great for all styles. I'm not surprised someone gave a Lionel Richie album as a birthday present. It could have been Europe, Madonna, Van Halen or Michael Jackson...

borked 05-22-2009 02:07 PM

sorry, but the deer eyes give it away...
but yeah he looks good, knife or not

borked 05-22-2009 02:09 PM

Sarah will prolly be able to answer this, cos her mind is fresher than mine ;)
but what was the ad that pumped that song in the UK? The one with the kid doing his newspaper round and the milkman.... Something stupid, I iknow, but I can't put my finger on it....mid-late 80s
