To make peanut butter:
1) Crush peanuts
2) Tada!

Elli 05-28-2009 12:09 PM

I loves my peanut butter :) The old fashioned kind made with just peanuts, of course! The kind you have to take out of the jar to give it that initial good stirring.

SilentKnight 05-28-2009 12:33 PM

Chunky or smooth? (the peanut butter, that is)

candyflip 05-28-2009 12:35 PM

A toasted PB&J is one of my most favorite snacks.

mvee 05-28-2009 12:38 PM

peanut butter yes, Nutella no!

grumpy 05-28-2009 12:39 PM

Twistys Tim 05-28-2009 12:40 PM

I like peanut butter (smooth) -- but I am more of a Marmite man myself...

I can only eat PB & J on white toast and I have to dip it into milk.

Diomed 05-28-2009 12:59 PM

I was raised on Peanut Butter.

WebairGerard 05-28-2009 01:08 PM

Not even close

candyflip 05-28-2009 01:17 PM

Nutella is hazelnut/chocolate. Not even close to peanut butter.

I tried that once when I was a little kid and it didn't spread so good.

ShellyCrash 05-28-2009 01:57 PM

I like nutella but can only do it in small doses because it is sooo sweet, I usually mix it with a little PB to even it out. I made a nutella sauce once with butternut squash ravioli that was pretty good.

Marmite I can't do, gives me shivers. I think you have to be raised on the stuff to dig it.

Calico Jack 05-28-2009 02:21 PM

I eat peanut butter most every day (I'm Australian)...love the stuff. The crunchier, the better. Not a fan of Nutella though as some are in the thread. I find my teeth ache from it's sweetness.

Gabriel 05-28-2009 02:41 PM

Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter and Cajeta for me. :thumbsup

haha, ya, I know. I just remember being a little kid and smashing a bunch of salted Planters peanuts on the table with my fist and thinking I was going to make them into nice creamy peanut butter. Didn't work out so well.

Sarah_Jayne 05-28-2009 02:56 PM

Most British people think I am crazy for liking peanut butter. Plus, they are all afraid their kids are going to explode if they have nuts. Personally, I just think it is because good peanut butter is so hard to get over here.

CYF 05-28-2009 04:04 PM

The lady at a non-profit I used to volunteer for sent peanut butter cups to Sweden for someone, I don't think they have those over there.

I love peanut butter, Nutella is good too.

Here's a chocolate peanut butter I have:

I also want to try their white chocolate variety:

Then you need to tell them a peanut is not actually a nut is a legume. It's closer to a pea than a nut.

Quote:

Peanut butter was invented and reinvented many times during history. Peanuts were known as early as 950 B.C. and originated in South America. The ancient Incas used peanuts and were known to have made it into a paste-like substance. As a crop peanuts emigrated from South America to Africa by early explorers and then traveled by trade into Spain who then traded the product to the American colonies. The first commercial peanut crop was grown in Virginia in the early to mid 1840's and in North Carolina beginning around 1818.

According to the Corn Products Company, Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis patented a peanut butter-making machine in 1903 and some unknown doctor invented peanut butter in 1890.

Quote:

Evidence of modern peanut butter comes from US patent #306727 issued to Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal, Quebec, in 1884, for a process of milling roasted peanuts between heated surfaces until the peanuts reached "a fluid or semi-fluid state." As the product cooled, it set into what Edson described as "a consistency like that of butter, lard, or ointment."

J.H. Kellogg, of cereal fame, secured US patent #580787 in 1897 for his "Process of Preparing Nutmeal," which produced a "pasty adhesive substance" that Kellogg called "nut-butter."

Peanut butter and jelly on toasted white bread is haute cuisine as far as I am concerned. :)

Had it and it is okay but still not as good as American peanut butter. Even the stuff British brands call American style just isn't the same. For starters, it is never creamy enough. Even chunky peanut butter should be creamy.

I grew up a smooth Jiff gal...a freshly opened jar of that is one of the best smells ever.
