The price a country is willing to pay to see the sea

This is just nuts...

Plans for a tunnel linking Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean have been unveiled by three architects who say it could put an end to a 130 year-old dispute between the landlocked country and its neighbour, Chile.
...
According to the plan, the tunnel would run under the so-called Line of Concord which separates Chile and Peru.
But both Peru and Chile dispute the border.
To go ahead, the project would also need the approval of Peru.
And there are doubts about whether there would be the political will at a time when Peru and Bolivia are arguing about Peru's decision to grant asylum to former opposition leaders from Bolivia.
In addition, the artificial island would be created in waters claimed both by Peru and Chile.

Killswitch - BANNED FOR LIFE 05-28-2009 12:35 PM

And why don't they just put a god damn road out there with a bridge? Why does it gotta be underground?

_Richard_ 05-28-2009 12:48 PM

that's a really cool idea

interesting that the people thinking it up are chilean

kmanrox 05-28-2009 01:02 PM

interesting idea.. i wonder how many gazillions of dollars it would cost to pull off if the political issues could be ironed out.

some of you should get a clue before speaking, seriously. Bolivia wants a sea exit not to go on vacations, but because they need it to export their goods to countries in the Pacific ocean. Right now, they have a port in Argentina (Rosario city) with exit to the Atlantic, hence the price of transport for their exportations is really big. That's why nor Chile neither Peru wants to give'em a sea exit: they want to cash in. To make it more complicated, that border in dispute between Peru and Chile was Bolivian once.

I really doubt it will happen, but it has its logic if you think in the long term, esp if they add an oil duct

Dude, chill! I never said they were willing to spend billions and much more in political favours to see the project through to completion to build a few beach-front condos :winkwink:

Mine is about 3 hours away from where I actually am.

And I can't see that tunnel being built TBH, take way to much money to do it, and with little return I would guess.

These guys should talk to the guy who dug the channel tunnel before they start looking for $$$

The channel tunnel was originally projected to cost £4.8 billion; its actual cost was £10.5 billion (in 1994).

michael.kickass 05-29-2009 01:10 PM

It's an endless debate Chile, Peru and Bolivia have.

Anyone truly knows why they're planning on building an underground tunnel instead of a road!?
