Go to hotscripts. Lots of software listed there to build search engines. Also do some searches at DP.

I did a long search some months back before settling on mine.

Honestly bud, if this is a long term investment. You would be better off doing custom. Most are shit in one way or another.

did you take the custom route? if not what software did you settle with? i'm not sure i want to invest that much into it at the moment to go custom as i'm not sure what the results will be like.

Just (ab)use the Google/Yahoo API. Pepper it with your own ads. Enjoy the minute traffic unless you find a good way to niche it out.
