All of you computer geeks...advice needed

I have a new computer (new to me anyhow...my brother upgraded and gave it to me) and as I was transferring software (via a thumbnail drive) from another of my computers and installing the softwear...all was going well and I was 80% done transfering...when all four of my USB ports quit working. Though I was irritated by this event...I thought to myself...no problem I will just finish transferring via CD's...only to discover that the CD/DVD rom drive on the new computer would no longer read or write. It was reading and writing as I had already tested it...so I assume it went down when the USB ports went down.

All of the drivers read as being operational...none the less I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers...still did not work. I searched for new drivers...none were found. I downloaded all of the drivers from the company (it is a shuttle computer) and installed them...still did not work. I have tried all of the microsoft solutions I could find (I am running XP Pro SP3)...including editing the registry...still did not work. I have run several different spyware/trojan/rootkit...programs and though some things were found and quarantined...still did not work.

I had installed some of the software but then decided that I did not need some of it anylonger and uninstalled some of it. I suspect this is what created the problem. I did a system restore when I discovered the problem but this did not correct the problem.

So I have a CD/DVD rom drive that does not read or write and four USB ports that are not working...and yet device manager says all is well...any suggestions will be appreciated.

disable usb in the bios ( f2 in startup )
restart and see if your drive is working again

Usually I go out of my way to help people even on GFY with computer problems.

In your case, however, you can suck it princess.

it strange technical problem.......

It's more than likely user error.

It might be the power supply. Try replacing it, see if it works.

Well I am making progress. I now have the USB ports working and the CD/DVD rom drive now tells me to insert a disc when I try to open the drive...where as it did not do this...but now won't recognize that a disc has been inserted.

Hey Honeyslut...how are things with you?

CrkMStanz 07-08-2009 09:09 PM

does your system use IDE harddrives?

if so... did you or you brother add or change an IDE device (hd drive / CD / DVD...)

if so... check your master/slave jumpers on each chain

cause that can cause what you are describing, and can even cause this problem intermittently, which is more frustrating.
