uuug had an external HD fail

damn external failed with 500 gigs of content on it! what a pain in the ass

Mutt 07-21-2009 10:00 AM

been there with a Lacie 500 GB :Oh crap

Tanker 07-21-2009 10:02 AM

this drive is a seagate baracuda sounds like someone dropped a ping pong ball inside it when the heads try to reset

ohh well now I just need to remember everything that is on there so I can make the decision on getting it recovered or just hitting it with a sledge hammer!

notime 07-21-2009 10:06 AM

That sucks. We had it too around 7 times already (mostly with Lacie drives by the way).
Raid-6 filers with backups these days.
Expensive but nessecary unfortunatly.

pain in the ass

That's why, at least with my own shoot archives, each external drive has a backup external drive. Drives are cheaper than lost shoots.

BobG 07-21-2009 01:40 PM

http://www.harddrive911.com/ were able to recover everything from 2 dead 1TB Lacie external for me at the best price by far, out of about 6-7 quotes. I highly recommend them if you're interested in recovery. Good luck!

JimmiDean 07-21-2009 01:44 PM

Thats what happens when you masturbate over your external drive.

WiredGuy 07-21-2009 01:58 PM

That's why when I buy an external HD I always buy 2. Backups of each other.

We've had good luck (so far) with several WD 1tb external drives.

VeriSexy 07-21-2009 05:07 PM

Had that happen to me a few times.. sucks

rowan 07-21-2009 05:13 PM

1. Never trust a hard drive. They are mechanical devices so they WILL fail. It is WHEN that is the question.
2. Back up everything to at least one other place. If it's another HD then try to use another brand or at least model.
3. Repeat the above two rules until it sinks in. :)

RAID all the way baby

I also have a daily backup of my RAID array going to a standalone drive which is regularly rotated with another drive offsite.

We had one crash about 2 years back 500 gigs of content made me want to cry :(:(

I hate losing drives. I had a couple maxtor drives fail about ten years ago.

Once a drive fails you definitely learn the lesson to backup early and often :2 cents:

gornyhuy 07-21-2009 08:36 PM

Had two drives fail in the same week this spring. Fucking painful. One turned out to be just the enclosure, the other was the control board. Thank jebus.

rowan 07-22-2009 05:11 PM

Just got back my replacement Velociraptor... even flagship, overpriced, enterprise grade drives fail. :thumbsup

suesheboy 07-22-2009 05:42 PM

lost a 1 tb 3 weeks ago. Still waiting for the replacement maxtor. TG it was a off site back up drive.
