RIP Ted Kennedy - The Liberal Lion of the Senate

Quote:

The man known as the "liberal lion of the Senate" had fought a more than year-long battle with brain cancer, and according to his son had lived longer with the disease than his doctors expected him to.

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," the Kennedy family said in a statement. "He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it."

Sen. Edward Moore Kennedy, the youngest Kennedy brother who was left to head the family's political dynasty after his brothers President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated.

Kennedy championed health care reform, working wages and equal rights in his storied career. In August, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- the nation's highest civilian honor -- by President Obama. His daughter, Kara Kennedy, accepted the award on his behalf.
Ted Kennedy had many heavy crosses to carry in his life, which many of us would have felt unbearable, but he was steadfast and tenacious to the end.

I do hope a comprehensive healthcare bill, with a public option, is passed in his honor.

No matter what side of the spectrum you're on, you have to give this guy props. He dedicated his life to his country and was one of the few that actually governed from the heart.

RIP

[IMG]Obama named Kennedy as one of 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor. A White House statement explained that the 2009 honorees "were chosen for their work as agents of change."

"Senator Kennedy has dedicated his career to fighting for equal opportunity, fairness and justice for all Americans. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that every American has access to quality and affordable health care, and has succeeded in doing so for countless children, seniors, and Americans with disabilities. He has called health care reform the "cause of his life."[/IMG]

The torch is passed...

Ted Kennedy was a master of the intricacies of Washington politics. The bottom lime is that he knew how to get things done...

He was a champion of the working class, and will forever be remembered for that, despite how much the right has campaigned to destroy him.

Only two Senators in history ever served longer in office than Ted Kennedy. That alone is a testament to the belief in him by the citizens whom he served for over four decades.

The irony is he was behind the current legislation.

DaddyHalbucks 08-26-2009 10:23 AM
