Nigeria demands apology from SONY for portraying Nigeria as "home of FRAUD"

Who'd a thunk it? So there's actually real money in that bank vault? I just have to pay the bank fees? :1orglaugh

The Minister of Information and Communication, Prof Dora Akunyili said contrary to the insinuations being made, ?Nigeria remains a major investment destination and a country where most businesses thrive in trust, good faith, competence and integrity.

According to the statement, ?Nigeria also demands an unconditional apology from Sony Corporation for this deliberate negative campaign against the country?s image and reputation.

?The apology must be given the same measure of publicity by Sony Corporation in all channels where the unfortunate adverts were aired.

?In the light of the above, the Federal Government of Nigeria requests Sony Corporation to immediately withdraw that advertisement from circulation.?
If you don't know about 419, check this: http://www.latimes.com/news/printedi...621,full.story :Oh crap:Oh crap

Attached to this document demanding this advertisement be removed was a notice that they won $400,000 in the local lottery.

Did anyone not already think Nigeria was one big fraud host?

TheLegacy 09-22-2009 02:38 PM

Seriously - in Canada we have Newfie's that everyone makes fun of - take the joke since Nigeria is used in scams all around the world... learn to laugh about it and use it in your campaigns instead of getting sensitive about the issue. We all should know that just because of a few online fraud's using Nigeria doesn't mean the entire country is bad.

Funny, I've seen that commercial at least a dozen times (or at least heard it while it was in TV in the background) and never picked up the "Nigerian millionaire" part before.

Brother of the same faith,

I fear that if not you shall show your fortitude of person and allow this small deposit, we shall not both reap the rewards of the monetary nature which is hidden deep within this country's bowels.

Lo, as Sony has smote my people, we shall not flourish, nor shall we want, nor shall we have access to the much required graceful brotherhood of religious internet.

OMG my gf and I, who's of Nigerian heritage, seen that commercial and was floored. It seems that no one hates a 419 scammer, or as they put it, "a yahoo millionaire" worse than an upstanding Nigerian citizen.
I laughed, but definitely saw that it was off color.

If Nigeria boy-cut US trades would that mean the end of Nigerian scam letters for US Citizens ?

andrej_NDC 09-22-2009 04:55 PM

Sony got some balls, love them lol

BlackCrayon 09-22-2009 05:18 PM

Sony should gather people who have been ripped off by Nigerians and file a huge class action since they do absolutely nothing to stop the scams.

sandman! 09-22-2009 05:26 PM

Big Red Machine 09-22-2009 06:37 PM

If they don't like the Bad Rep, their government should go after the scammers, otherwise they earned their low standing in the world.

Cool, I bought a G5 with my "fugitive general needs your help to release bank funds" windfall. I'll pick you up and we can talk about your ad network while sipping Lafite Rothschild at Cinque Terre. :winkwink:

Just wondering:

Does anyone know what the authorities in Nigeria are doing about all the fraud, if anything at all?

I saw a 20/20 report a few years ago about the scams. 20/20 had no problem at all meeting with a scammer, then finding locations where a dozen or more scammers are all on the phone or online ripping off suckers from anywhere they can. Can these people not be stopped?

If those scam gangs are operated like a typical Third World syndicate, I'm sure there's government "permission" for such operations. For a % cut, of course. For those that don't wish to payment for "permission"--they are made posterboys for the government's crackdown on fraud/crime. :helpme

And this is all correct, Nigeria is a scam country.

ContentPimp 09-22-2009 11:26 PM

The Duck 09-22-2009 11:40 PM

I had a Nigerian ICQ me the other day asking to me to send him "sexy picture".
