[pics]New Camera - Bad Reviews - Nice Pics? [pics]

Nikon Coolpix S220 - $149
Mainly for fun photos, blogging, on the go, amateurish snapshots.

Samples are from playing with different settings and trying to get a clear and vibrant shot. Some instances were great, while others looked like shit.

Here are a few I liked, but the spider could have been so much better. He was crisp and full of color and detail on the screen, but then SNAP!, way off! WTF?

Thoughts. Opinions. Any other owners of this model?

Thanks. Truth is, about 8 out of 10 shots to get the right one. Although I am getting used to what settings work in a specific light/location.

it's nice to start shooting with something simple before getting into it and buying something more expensive

Lot of chromatic aberration in those pics.

woj 10-04-2009 08:15 AM

for $150, it's not bad :thumbsup

Perhaps I had White Balance set to auto? Or just the camera/lens itself will produce this?

There was a Sony Cybershot for $130 and a Nikon Coolpix s70 I think for $130 and another one that slips my mind that we really considered somewhere between $130 - $150. I guess I expected more from a Nikon. We bought it at a retail shop, had I looked online I pobably would have read some reviews. Our cap was at $150 for a digicam since we had a ton more shopping to do.

It was for the girlfriend so she wouldn't have to use her cell phone anymore, which oddly is exactly what the reviews I read have said. "Great camera if you are just sick of using your cell phone." Pretty harsh review!

I just had to play with it to see what kind of results I could get out of it. The reviews were detailed, but maybe they didn't have time to experiment with it?

This is a lens issue. It means that the colours split (look at the edges of the flowers, for example, you can see a blue 'halo' around the edges of the white flowers.

How do the bad shots look? It's hard to tell but I suspect you may have a bit of camera shake... one easy way to reduce that is to hold your breath as you push down the shutter and take the pic. Hold the camera still for a moment or two longer after you think the pic has been taken. (My mobile phone makes the sound BEFORE it takes the pic...)

Manowar 10-04-2009 02:09 PM

pics look good to me

Nice - the best thing you can learn is lighting but keep up the good work

I do get a lot of shake. I noticed some settings have it more than others. So I thought anyway. Then suddenly settings I knew took the pic almost instantly were lagging too. But I learned early on with digicams that you have to be patient while capturing. I am always quick to whip it around, only to show a motion blur... oops. "Everyone line up again, that one din't work out." Hahaha :1orglaugh

Also lighting, white balance. Like every pic I take I have to go change a few things and take like 3 pics before I get one I like. Without blur.

My eyes aren't well, and if they were I doubt I would notice. But that is sort of why I made this thread. I wanted to see from a professionals standpoint if this camera was as bad as the review made it to be. The pics in this post are certainly the best it has taken so far. Sometimes it's not the camera as much as it is the photographer. Plus, if all I can get for critique on GFY is for some barely visible blue "halos" then that is not bad at all for a $150 cam.

I am in no way trying to take professional photos here. So that means it's most likely better than the review makes it. It would almost have to be, because the guy pretty much made me feel stupid for buying it. I cried for hours, my girl has been calling me a "loser" for picking it out. I wanted to go with CyberShot originally. Then when we decided on Nikon my guy instinct kicked in and I went for te higher end model (between the L20 and S220). Though overall performance it was in 3 of 5 a lot. But not 1 or 2. Kodak easyshare had a 5 rating on almostall graphs.
