Can someone tell me what this is called. I know it is utilizing white space and etc.
I know you could somewhat replicate it by taking any photo, making it black and white, adjusting levels extremely, and removing all details from the image, essentially creating a vector.
Is there a name for this though, besides "vectoring"?

Ok the panda is a bad example.

I guess it's more of an illustration of a portrait. A portrait illustration if you will.

the first one uses what is known as "negative space", based in Gestalt theory. The second one.... just "vector art", black and white drawing or whatever you wanna call it.

Hmm, also called stencil art according to a tutorial I came across.

Yep, found what I needed. Disregard all.

vector art or vexel art - same thing except vector art is done with vector drawing programs like Illustrator, vexel is done with bitmap/raster programs like Photoshop.

if you want to do either of them you better become a master of the pen tool.

there are lots of tutorials for quick ways to get that effect but they all look fairly crappy when u take a closer look.

this is a great online tool http://vectormagic.com/home upload any bitmap image and it will convert it to vector - for those black and white vector drawings of people's faces, it will work great. for photographs, not bad but not great.
