Motherboard: Asus P6T
CPU: i7 920
Memory: DDR3 6gigs

My system is stable because I have an industrial strength cooling fan.

When idle my CPU temp is at 27 C and when at full throttle 48 C.

The reason I am overclocking is because it shaves off time from video encoding. Allows me to run multiple programs including Photoshop.

The last improvements is getting high quality memory 12GB and a solid state drive for Windows system files.

Choopa Phil 11-11-2009 12:36 PM

im running basically the same hardware as you. What is needed to overclock besides a fan like that?

Gasper 11-11-2009 12:41 PM

I have a pentium 2, 32 Mb ram @ 8400 Ghz .. without overclocking

TheSenator 11-11-2009 12:42 PM

Go into the BIOS and set it up..

Make sure you read up on overclocking there are a lot of articles.

Here is a good article on overclocking i7 920.

Congrats, that are some great numbers :thumbsup

San 11-11-2009 12:53 PM

cool story, bro

Shoplifter 11-11-2009 12:53 PM

I have exactly the same rig as you, i7 920 and P6T. Even the same Noctua cooler. I recently put it all in a Raven RV-02 case where the motherboard is mounted at a 90 degree angle to help control temps.

What is your idle temp at 4.2?

I am completely blown away by these i7 rigs. I thought my old Core 2 x6800 was fast, but this thing just smokes.

dready 11-11-2009 01:08 PM

Holy crap, I have the same setup too, with an Ultra-120 cooler. I'm happy with 3.4GHz.

Day to day core temps ~42C.

dyna mo 11-11-2009 01:10 PM

what primary hard drive are you going with? my windows 7 experience rating is above 7.5 for all components except the primary drive and it's 10000rpm raptor!

Persius 11-11-2009 01:10 PM

So whats your encoding times :upsidedow

TheSenator 11-11-2009 01:16 PM

My idle temp is currently 26 degrees Celsius.

CamJack 11-11-2009 01:33 PM

Do you really need that size of a processor for 10,000+ posts on gfy?
I didn't think firefox needed that much juice.

grumpy 11-11-2009 01:33 PM

why not get a card that supports CUDA ? safer and faster

TMM_John 11-11-2009 01:38 PM

4.2ghz on air *scared*

You still need to come up and visit one day. You'll like the monster I'm building in here now :)

I use Vegas 9 so no CUDA. I only know of Magic Bullet using CUDA.

Ravage 11-11-2009 02:01 PM

Wow, on air? That's nice. I take it this is in open air and not a case?

Impressive. That thing must really be fast.

Flashcash-Andy 11-11-2009 02:53 PM

Mine is faster :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

can someone knowledgeable comment on the minimum specs required for the primary hd to keep-up with the speed of an i7 chip?

the chip can be so blazing fast it catches fire but if the hd isn't up to spec, it's all for naught.

Its a closed case....

I have two case fans, two cpu fans attached to a monster heat sink....all blowing out to the back.

Its also quiet...extremely quiet.

Currently after doing some encoding, photoshops, cropping, farting, 8 FireFox windows, two IE8 windows with "developers tool" turned on and some more drinking....TEMP is at 30.5 degrees Celsius.

The system seems to respond faster the more I throw at it.

run prime95 overnight, if it's not going to lockup then your system is stable... also your vcore is pretty high, i'm clocked at 3.8ghz on c0 as well and my vcore is 1.27

Still stable but I turned down the juice through TurboV provided by ASUS. My BCLK frequency was at 200 but I turned it down to 190.

I can do this without rebooting or going into the BIOS.

I turned down my CPU voltage to 1.35 ....

My system just wants to work, so I am gonna give it some videos to encode while surfer and chopping at the same time. Im gonna need a third monitor maybe a forth one just to watch my PC wizard stats.

bronco67 11-11-2009 06:38 PM

That's what I've been running at for 6 months.

My other i7 rigs run at 3.8, but for some reason, there's one 920 that likes to go higher than the others. You can tweak all of that stuff properly, have the right RAm, yada, yada, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to luck of the draw.

"Did I get the good one out of the batch?"

beta-tester 11-11-2009 07:25 PM

i7 is a sexy bitch :) I bet it rocks for you!

dav3 11-11-2009 09:03 PM

That's pussy shit, I have a Pentium II with the MMX technologies and 8x CDROM drive. I also have anti-glare protector with intel MMX stickers on my 15inch monitor.
