Modern Warfare 2' rakes in $550 million in first five days
 

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues its onslaught on video game sales records.

Activision says the first-person shooter grossed $550 million worldwide in its first five days of release, an entertainment industry record. The game bests previous record-holder Grand Theft Auto IV, which generated $500 million during the same timeframe in 2008.

No word yet from Activision on how many copies of the game sold globally since its arrival on November 10. According to Activision estimates obtained by the Los Angeles Times, about 8 million copies were sold.

The amount of online activity on Xbox Live is equally astonishing. Citing statistics from Microsoft, Activision says more 5.2 million online multiplayer hours were logged and 11 million achievements unlocked on the first day. Also, more than 2.2 million unique players tried the game at launch. Numbers for the PlayStation 3 and PC were not included.

Last week, Activision announced Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies on the first day of release in North America and the U.K., grossing about $310 million.

I grabbed my copy at midnight and love it. The multi-player section is like crack, its so addictive.

BTW...there is also a teddy bear in the Afgan map of multi-player. Haven't seen the blow up doll.

ive never heard of it until today

Imagine how much LESS money would have been made if the XBOX 360 and PS3 weren't closed systems which make pirating this game virtually impossible. Sure some people did it on the XBOX then promptly got their consoles permantly banned from XBL which is a fate worse than death for these gamers.

Anyways I'm sure the game is good I'm just not into those type of games.

btw, while you guys think porn industry is hurting, so is video games, EA just laid off over 1500 people, and closed a few studios... I work in both industries so I get a bit of incite in both.

The thing is people, companies are getting weeded out, you need to be creative, come up with original ideas, think outside of the adult or video game box to be successful at times.. of course true games such as COD and others similar have a high hardcore fan base... Activision is planning on using a different developer for the next COD,thats locateced in florida... does this mean they might shut down the original studio? who knows, fucking bean counters are pulling the strings these days.

$550 in 5 days for Modern Warfare. Unbelievable. Makes me want to play it.

I should be getting my copy in the next hour. Of course, I won't be playing it till much later tonight after work. :)
