WOW! US Army Corp of Engineers found liable for Katrina flooding

I just read this on CNN. A judge ruled today that the US Army Corp of Engineers knew that the levee protecting the lower 9th ward of New Orleans was in poor repair and did nothing about it. The court found that because of this negligence the US ACE is liable for the damages suffered by the flood victims. Five of the six plaintiffs were rewarded amounts ranging from 200K to 317K. The court also said that the ruling applies to all of the 100,000 or so homes and business that were destroyed or damaged by the flooding. The mayor of New Orleans is happy and says he hopes they can work out some kind of mass settlement to every person doesn't have to go to court to get paid.

Get ready for a tax hike, someone has to pay for those settlements.

but less money than it would have cost for the govt to get all those "undesirables" out of there by any other means.

Baddog must be up arms about this issue.

The mods should just make this post invisible to Baddog. An old man can only take so much.

If I understand it correctly a lot of the people that were living there have moved to other places and they did so on tax payer money. So they had the tax payers move them, now they are going to get another payout.

I would assume that this will be appealed and the appeal process will probably go to the Supreme Court so at the least there will not be any payout...probably for years. Your understanding is also my understanding...billions upon billions have already been spent on the victims of Katrina.

Not only did they know. They very likely blew those damn things to protect the nicer areas.
