FTC, VISA, BBB Condemn Bad Billing

Just read this on http://www.xbiz.com/news/115753

Companies involved in fraudulent billing practices beware: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), along with Visa and the Better Business Bureau are coming after you....

Things are gonna change then?

pixovore 12-21-2009 02:18 PM

I can t wait...

fatfoo 12-21-2009 02:20 PM

Fraud is not good.

XPays 12-21-2009 02:33 PM

people need to read the terms and conditions and not make the ftc be their guardian

Brujah 12-21-2009 03:35 PM

You wouldn't consider this to be deceptive?
Quote:

According to the Commission, in a negative option feature, a company takes a consumer's failure to cancel a free trial offer as permission to begin charging for the service. While many merchants use this billing process appropriately, others pre-check consent boxes, bury the details of the offers in the fine print, terms and conditions, and make cancellations or returns difficult, catching consumers in a cycle of recurring charges for products and services they do not want.

Robbie 12-21-2009 03:45 PM

If they were to decide that it's illegal to automatically rebill...then everybody in this business will soon be OUT of business. Everybody.

XPays 12-21-2009 03:49 PM

terms should be next to the submit button or above it and clearly displayed above the fold. the problem here is lumping in all recurring charges to the same package as those that bury the payment terms where they won't be read.

Agent 488 12-21-2009 03:50 PM

sweet wire story rewrite. very informative.

Shut up you fucking douche. You sit here and watch the collapse of credit card processing for adult online - mostly caused by some people you're good friends with.. so you defend the most deceptive practices there has been since Crescent?

the problem IS the well known players doing their "$0.00" - "100% Free" shit and then banging the shit out of peoples cards with multiple recurring charges AND hidden cross sells. you know this. you know who has done it on a massive scale. you know what the "problem" is.

stop being an idiot.

JarvisEncoding 12-21-2009 04:05 PM

Bump for you!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

i would point more towards the health landers and offers actually. i am not defending any of the billing scammers. it is just reflexive b.s. for the ftc to slap legit offers while the scammers are running rampant. you are pointing back to like 1999? crescent?

reflexive BS? you can't be this naive. the numbers are huge. the amount of money made in 07/08 from this crap is mind boggling. and its the scammers that make them call everything into question. its not the legit offers that make the FTC want to call scammers into question.

again... most people "in the know" - knew this shit was coming for over a year now. lets call it what it is and be honest about whats happening.

Agent 488 12-21-2009 04:17 PM

sounds very similar what's going on now.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6928696/...courts/page/2/

card banging, frontmen, call centers ... eerily similar.

Press Release Pro 12-21-2009 05:04 PM

Fact say that CC bangers don't give a shit about the BBB
Fact say that surfers don't check BBB before joining
Fact say that CC bangers don't bank in USA

So what will change ?

MetaMan 12-21-2009 05:14 PM

anyone who thinks this is good is a fucking idiot.

soon recurring will be gone at this rate.

it is the stupid govts fault for not allowing so many frivolous law suits to go on which force companies to write long "unclear" terms.

Now that would not be good, I agree.

the Shemp 12-22-2009 12:26 AM

is the BBB going to have a list of recommended porn sites ?

ztik 12-22-2009 01:45 AM

I like that xbiz edited that story to sound more geared towards the adult industry.. lol

Les Grossman 12-22-2009 05:37 AM

Nothing will change. The guys who are able to pull such scams, will always be able to pull such scams, because they are scammers. That's what scammers do.

Sure, YOU and I may not see how they will do it, but that is because we are not scammers. If you have a scamming brain, you're already 4 steps in front of something like this.

NetHorse 12-22-2009 05:52 AM

I guess it's a step in the right direction? It's going to take a loooooooooong time before a lot of people trust their credit card with porn sites though. A lot of trust is gone because of "scavengers". Pre-checked cross sale trials that renew, trials that are automatically signed up for that need to be canceled, memberships that can't be canceled, etc.

The pieces of shit that are banking using these shady practices can say whatever they want, "read the TOS", "people in mainstream are worse", blah blah blah. One by one they are infecting buyers that will NEVER buy porn online again after being burned.

Whatever, it's the nature of people I guess. The only thing to hope is for someone to make some rules and enforce them.

Of course they won't. There are plenty that will do just fine.

oh yea I remember that:
http://news.cnet.com/Porn-site-owner..._3-244881.html

>> The company also is alleged to have posted confusing charges on credit card statements under names that were different from the Web sites. For example, instead of a charge from "www.climaxmag.com" or another Crescent Publishing site, consumers' statements would list charges from "Online Forum, Inc.," "Hoot Owl, Inc." or "Knock Knee, Inc."

In THIS business? Mainstream is built on shady billing practices, it would be affected as well.

whats the cliff note on the terms?

Major (Tom) 12-22-2009 04:03 PM

The BBB is useless. 100% they have no power.
The FTC and Visa? well, that's another story.
Duke

HomerSimpson 12-22-2009 06:23 PM

now we will blame tubes and ftc/visa :)

No worries about that...even without all 3, people would still find enough excuses for their failure. Tubes just made it too easy for them.
