Death Valley National Park (pics)

On our drive back from Internext we decided to take a slight detour through Death Valley. If you have never been, I highly recommend it. The place is so surreal that you might feel that you have stepped onto another planet. In fact, Death Valley has been used in several movies and television shows because of its diverse landscapes.

You can see all the pictures at http://www.gotbaddog.com/death-valley-national-park/

Here are a few teasers.

Judging by its location on the map, I suspect we may have Thursday evening . . . but it was not a planned destination. I have never heard of the place, but it looks like somewhere I will have to check out more closely.

Well, I did not pick up any fireworks this time around due in part to my ample personal stash plus with the luggage of two of us I really did not have room to restock.

However, one of the few Christmas cards I received this year was from Phantom.

Yes it is. Thanks to the US Navy for making GPS available to the general public, otherwise this would have been a very different adventure.

Well...your nose would let you know if you did as the town and area smells of rotten eggs because of the two large industries they have there. Really nothing to check out...just a small town...but it is sometimes called the gateway to Death Valley. I have been through Trona and spent a few days doing Death Valley.

We entered from the east. Where we exited from is anybodies guess as it was dark and we were not using a map. I started running low on gas and needed to find a town fast. I pulled the GPS back and was pretty surprised to discover that I was in a completely different part of the state than I thought.

I thought I was looking for one highway and it turned out that was never going to happen.

theking 01-17-2010 05:02 PM

BTW...if I remember correctly Trona received some attention from the media...sometime in the sixties...as the Hell's Angels invaded the place and raised a little hell.

I have another motto... sometimes you find something magical on a dead end road.

I discovered an old wooden bridge that had been underwater since the 60s at the end of an obscure rural lane. (The other side isn't even a public road any more, it's private land). Recent drought has caused the huge man made lake to revert to its original small river. Didn't go up that road for any particular reason, just felt like making a random turn... glad I did. :thumbsup

Never got lost, just did not really know where we were. A significant difference. :)

Yeah, it was due to my inexperience with polaraizer lens. I appreciate the offer, but would really rather learn to touch them up myself [as it is a huge PITA to replace galleries]. I would love some advice on how to "live'em up."

BTW, you don't know this, but you are slightly involved in goodgirl and my introduction to each other.

Weather is part of what makes Death Valley so interesting. We were up at Dante's View where it was 50, then Furnace creek where it was 75. After dark it dropped into the low 40's.

hmmm, maybe that is why I feel a cold coming on.
