i am looking to upload my films them automatlicly have them converted to flash format to play on a tube site.

what is a good option.

I know jmbsoft.com/software/tubex/ has this integrated. Doing this from scratch may be a pain as there is quite some configuration going on, especially if you are going to have members upload videos in different formats and using different codecs. There are actually 3rd party companies who JUST specialise in this type of thing!

You may need to use it in conjunction with mencoder to cater for a large number of formats and/or encodings.

When you do convert, go for h.264 encoding rather than FLV.

But then anyone still with Flash 8 - actually Flash 9 Update 2 and under - won't be able to play the videos. That's actually a lot of people. Millions, especially corporate users, are still stuck with old Flash versions - security holes and all.

True, but in my experience corporations (and government) don't even have the Flash plugin installed and even if they did, their firewall will most likely be configured to block porn sites.

The good thing about h.264 is that it is quite universal and some mobile phones already support it, so in essence you are "future-proofing" your site.

But you do have a point - keep your eye on Google Analytics and see which Flash plugin your users have. If most of them have the old plugin then stick to FLV.

Konrad is the shit, and imho has forgotten more than just about anyone else knows about how to create tube sites. I think he's pretty backed up with work though.
