Opera mini now available for iphone

So it actually got accepted! This is a really fast browser that gets around the safari rendering engine by clever use of proxies.

I spose its also heaven for fake nick trolling....

Played with it for over an hour and without hesitation gets #1 spot for mobile browser of choice.

I'm gonna download it right away. Gizmodo had raving reviews too.

Seems really quick
Using it now

I like Opera Mobile better than Opera Mini.

They just released Opera Mini for Android too. I installed it last night and dumped it within 5 minutes.

Congrats to iPhone users :)

I tested and I must say it does not please me.

This browser is still regressive for specialized mobile sites, though on the basis, it is optimized to improve the display of non-mobile sites on mobile devices, by compressing the data via its proxy.

What I have observed :

- Forget the continuous zoom : there are only 2 views
- The layouts are not respected
- The images are too compressed, pixelated rendering
- Text boxes links are difficult to target and must try several times, even for larger text
- No Video : Opera Mini attempts to open the video in Safari via its proxy

If Opera Mobile has been submitted to Apple, it would not be accepted because of its engine identical to Safari.

It is probably for this reason that Apple has accepted the application Opera Mini in his store.

Meanwhile, Opera has gone through one door, more to come... :winkwink:

All valid points, but the fact another browser is available to the iphone is great and a well thought out way of getting it accepted.
It's by no means perfect, but it's a fantastic opening version. The tabs are fantastic, load times are great, zoom is two-step crap but I'm sure this will come with maturity, and proxy browsing isn't a bad thing.

And because it's proxy browsing, it even gives them a great hand on ad revenue should there be a paid/free version incarnation in the future.

Opera have a great track record to date on security, but I found it somewhat disconcerting that you could download and use the browser without having to agree to any terms about privacy, since they can (and must likely will) store your browsing habits.

That is why I concluded that Opera Mini has opened a door that other browsers may also take one day.

mikke 04-13-2010 09:09 AM

i downloaded it.. and removed in 5 minutes.. its much slower than safari, and nav is really crap!

BestXXXPorn 04-13-2010 09:20 AM

Great, another browser to support quirks for... awesome... just what we needed...

And you won't beat the JS processing speed of safari... not when they can develop everything native to the iPhone OS and have unfettered access to whatever they want to do... not now, not ever.

DirtyJs 04-13-2010 11:45 AM

I installed Opera Mini on my android and it was 3 times slower than the default browser. Made no sense at all. I think it might be a bug with all the different versions of android.

I like Dolphin, but got xScope and have been liking it a little more.

:2 cents: ditto

So mobile sites are already lo bandwidth?

I might use safari for mobile enabled sites
And opera for general surfing
Atleast i increase the 8 open tabs limit

Iphones are real bw misers
Been surfing all week and only 150mb

If opera cuts bandwidth i can use a cheaper plan

Good point re additional browser support hassles for mobile content providers. It will probably be a while until another browser matches safari's speed and seamless performance. Opens doors though.

borked 04-14-2010 09:17 AM

Safari on my iphone is slow as hell in rendering pages, whereas Opera mini is lightening fast.
Very strange!!

HELMY 04-14-2010 10:15 AM

it doesn't render CNN Mobile right.
