Most New Yorkers don't know that last year, the New York Police Department arrested close to 50,000 people for marijuana possession at a staggering cost of nearly $100 million. Even fewer know that possession of marijuana has been decriminalized in New York State since 1977. Yet over thirty years later, New York City has the dubious distinction as the marijuana arrest capital of the world.

I was reading about this the other day. It surprised me because last year I was told that they had really relaxed on it and that it wasn't a priority to arrest people for pot in NYC anymore. I guess my friend was wrong!

I've never known anyone to get into any sort of trouble for pot in NY. Both times I was searched and had some on me, they just took our buds and sent us packing...probably enjoyed it themselves at bit later.

It's as "illegal" in the eyes of the law as driving 65 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. You get a fine of about $125 if you're caught carrying more than 7/8 of an ounce. My recent speeding ticket was twice that. :1orglaugh

Arresting people someties can be cruel. They have made many arrests in Cambodia few years ago.

Got busted for possesion back in '92. Cost me $25 in fines. Don't know what it is today.

Cops are the worst in NYC when it rains. They don't want to walk around so they stand in hallways and bust people in their own buildings.
