(he also asked me why wordpress themes are called themes, and when i was like, well a theme is a recurring motif or design, and themes bring a uniform design to a blog, this also baffled him. he is 25 years old and does not understand the definition of "theme" - when i asked him to give me an example of a theme, trying to help him grasp it, he gave me an example of... a splash landing page. no. no, something that only occurs once, on the landing page, by definition is not recurring, and thus not a theme. shut up, i hate you.)

It sounds like he's not computer savvy much at all. Probably heard that "there's ways to make money on the internet" and was trying to find out more.

My bank manager asked me similar questions a few years back. I tried explaining the affiliate-program business model using Amazon.com as the prime example, as well as providing several comparative examples such as the franchise system, sub-contractors, etc. We had a very lovely conversation for nearly an hour about this, after which I still sensed major confusion. She grasped the real-world applications, but every time the example was applied to the internet her grasp of the concept seemed to evaporate. Every. Time. And she's not the only one I've tried explaining what I do to.

Conclusion; when it comes to the internet there are still a lot of people out there who have zero grasp of what it is much less how money is made on it.

Thus this guy friend of yours isn't all that alone in his ignorance.

I wish that were the case. He's a mod on an internet forum and spends like 95% of his time online, from what he's told me.
