So, I picked up the new Sprint HTC EVO 4G phone..
I was up early this morning and i had time to go to the Sprint store. Thought i would pick up the new Sprint HTC EVO on the way to running a few errands. Thought it would be a quick in and out. I WAS WAY WRONG!!
There were 60 people outside in line at 9am, and i herd there were 80 lined up when doors opened up. Fortunately i had a girl i knew near the front of the line that pulled me in line with her. Then when we got in there were another 30 or so people waiting. In short i was there for 2 hours even with the line cut. Was it worth the wait?? YUP! Its a pretty bad ass phone. Been playing with it all day. If you have Sprint, it is a must have. I was due for a phone upgrade and was waiting for this thing to come out. The wait sucked, but this phone really rocks. I suck at Youtube imbeds, but here is a link of the HTC EVO phoned being reviewed. https://youtube.com/watch?v=Bz7ii1KFEoM |
I lost you at HTC.. sorry I'm a douchebag iPhone lover. I mean they copy the sliding motion, the name, etc, idk I could be wrong.
Edit: LOL I love the kickstand, I actually struggle propping up my phone all the time. |

I love Apple, but i hate ATT worse!! Been with Sprint since 95 and they have been good to me. Thought i would give the HTC a try. Im really impressed with it and what it does. Droid And HTC are here to stay. They are for real. At the end of the day, i think Iphone rocks, but this new droid also rocks. And ATT sux!!!:2 cents: |

im thinking of getting one too |
Androids the shit and I totally would have gotten the EVO but I wanted a keyboard so I got the moment.... I am *almost* regretting my decision watching the wirefly review but I use the keyboard every 5 seconds, the camera and stuff like that, not as much.

The Sprint stores near my house in South FL had no lines at all this morning. I went to one at ten am and they had a unit in stock but the only issue was that they didn't want to sell me one the spot without a pre-order in because I was an existing customer! That's right, they were saving them for new customers and would only ship it to me on Monday, along with a free Bluetooth headset, which I don't use. I darted to the Radio Shack nearby and one guy was buying the last one there. The Radio Shack closest to my house luckilly had one left however. And The Shack gave an instant rebate so I was only out $199 + tax or $211 out the door, and don't have to wait for a rebate in the mail.
It took hours and hours for the Sprint system at The Shack to become unstuck. I went to eat lunch and finally got my order in and the line activated late this afternoon. Now I still have to go back to a Sprint store this weekend to get help transferring my 600 contacts from my Samsung Rant feature phone! I played around with the phone just a little bit to make & receive a call and browse around with the default web browser. The web browser is very nice, especially compared to what I am used to with Opera Mini 3 and a tiny screen and only buttons for controls. Suprisingly to me, even with only Android 2.1.1 (not Froyo 2.2 yet) it actually plays the flash header on the site in my sig for example and also successfully plays Youtube videos in browser and even a Flash based tube site with mp4 videos like Tube8.com. Web based photos like you may see posted in a thread here on GFY look really good on this phone as well. Overall the phone feels pretty good in the hand, large but not too large and very slim. I am getting used to the touch screen already, hopefully. I also have to figure out what kind of screen protector I am going to use. Drawbacks I notice so far. The battery does indeed seem to be draining pretty fast as I put the phone through it's paces. I am going to need a car charger and maybe extra battery. The video camera and main 8 MP front facing camera protrude out so that every time you put your phone down it touches the camera lens to whatever surface you lay it on, which may scratch it I am afraid. There is some light leakage at the bottom of the phone screen (at least on mine) just over the four soft keys, which is especially noticeable if you tilt the bottom of the screen away from you. And last but not least, the phone feels pretty hot to my hand. That may be nice for up North in the winter, but not too cool for a hot & humid South Florida summer. |
I got the EVO today. Went last night and paid the deposit, they called me around 4 and told me to come pick it up.
When I called them earlier in the week, I told them Best Buy is offering no activation, gift card, and instant rebate, but that I'd rather go through them (Sprint Store) and if they could match the offer. The couldn't offer the gift card OR the instant rebate, BUT they did offer me a 25% discount on my plan for the life of my contract. $70 plan + $10 internet bonus fee, and I'm only paying $65 after taxes so that's a huge leg up on the shack and BB. The phone is great. Very fast. The battery drains quickly if you have 4G on all the time - kick it back to 3G unless you need 4G. If you think you won't stand clicking on a screen to type, then look up ShapeWriter Keyboard - it's almost exactly like Swype. You press the screen ONE time and connect the letters in the words you want. My typing speed is up by quite a bit, even compared to a physical keyboard! |

Got mine and LOVE it. I loved my Samsung Moment, but this is my most favorite gadget ever.
|
Got the body glove case which seems to protect the camera really well and got a plastic film put over the face of it. Bought both at Sprint. With those 2 items the phone seems very sturdy with out adding much bulk.
As far as battery drain, It is never an issue for me. For every phone i have ever owned i would keep a car charger, wall charger in my car, a wall charger at both of my studios, and a wall charger in my camera bag. I pic them up for about $10 at Wall Mart. Definitely worth it. Im the wrong guy to ask about battery life, because my batteries get worked over. Sounds funny, but i absolutely never miss my calls due to no battery power. Still getting used to the touch screen typing. Pain in the ass, but i see a lot of people good at it, so there is hope for me. Never had an Iphone so i cant say which is better, but i can say that this phone is badass and fun to play with. With all of the cool things it does, i hope that the phone part works as well as my BlackBerry did. My Blackberry had zero issues in the last 2 years.:2 cents: |
i've been waiting for this phone for awhile, was going to wait for some more feedback from the masses...so far the only drawback anyone has been saying is the battery life. not having 4g (yeah no 4g in socal) but having to pay for it kinda sucks.
overall looks awesome. i'm a crackberry dude but this thing looks very promising. |
i'm gonna go in and buy mine next month :2 cents:
got a moment right now and love it. |
if it didnt cost so much now to get out of my iphone contract. I was thinking about it.

I went to a Sprint Store today and they transferred my 598 contacts and all of their numbers to my new Evo 4G in minutes. Like Dave I also purchased a black Body Glove case. The extra thickness & sturdiness actually feels good in the hand and also protects the camera lens simultaneously. I dropped down to the Everything Data 450 plan for $69/month so even with the $10 extra plus $4 or so for some kind of service plan, my cell bill will be about $83 plus taxes, which is cheaper than it was before and much cheaper than other carriers. Also with Sprint the unlimited data plan really is unlimited unlike ATt&T. There are some tricks to improve battery life including temporarilly turning off un-used services like 4G if not available in youir area yet as well as Bluetooth & WiFI if you are not using them. You can toggle those on and off from a widget on the home screen. Advanced Task Killer is an app some poeople recommend as well to turn off un-used background tasks and improve battery life. I recharge every night and I will also bring or have an extra charger to plug into AC or laptop USB even on remote sets if my battery goes low durning the afternoon from heavy use. I haven't played with the still or video camera yet (720p handheld Ex-GF video content coming soon!). Next I am most interested to see if I can tether my laptop using only a free app PDAnet that I have been reading about. Even at only 3G, if I can check my email and get online anywhere I have a basic 3G signal then I will be very happy with my purchase indeed!
|
I would also like to add that I am very, very impressed by the default browser. I have been browsing around to many adult & maisntream sites and it has played every flash banner and background graphics on various web pages nearly perfectly which I did not expect this early in the game, Also web video clips like say on Yahoo MMA or CNN pretty much start right up and play after short loading periods. You can even zoom in on the video players and watch horizontally so it fills the screen more. The phone has decent audio without using headphones and a large video screen. I have never used an iphone, but if what I understand to be true, that it can't play simple flash banners, backgrounds, flash video and various other web media on the fly in a browser like this one does, then I think Android is really going to give them some serious competition!

I'm going down to pick mine up right now.
|
I plan to get one HTC Android soon
just need to see what operaters have to offer |
Good luck with your phone, JustDaveXxx.

I use my PC, my latest laptop...acer 5740g, oh yeah... sweet as you like acer i5 processor, 640gb harddrive & 4gb ram. But I do love my iphone 3gs. Ive seen the HTC & held one. Liking the iphone too much. Nothing else competes. :thumbsup |
Got HTC and I love it. It's badass!
|
iPhone 4g will be announced on Monday and it'll be bye bye evo news. Palm pre did it last year and same thing happened. Not enough 4g for me
|
Plus it's with sprint. Maybe with verizon it'd fly but with sprint and their piss poor customer service, don't think so.
Sprint's system crashed today with the activations and that was for a low amount of sales vs other major launches. Like android and have a droid but evo needs a major battery improvement and a much larger 4g push to succeed. |
Slightly OT but... Android fucking rocks!

Got to love GFY for its baseless, opinionated posts.:thumbsup Im not knocking the iphone, im just saying that this new HTC EVO really rocks. HTC and Android, really came out with a quality product to compete with another quality product, which is the iphone. It seems that if you like something on GFY, you must hate and rip on its competition. Thats not me. I like both phones and am not willing to switch to ATT for an iphone. My buddy Alan calls my new HTC phone the "Not the iphone". "Hey Dave, how are you liking the "not the iphone"? I heard that your new "not the iphone" is pretty good for a smart phone. I heard a lot of people are digging the new "not the iphone". But you know what dave? No matter how cool your new HTC phone is, it's still, "not the iphone". Its funny shit and i get it everyday from him. I just got into Android can anybody list their top 10 favorite apps and why you like them. Thanx most appreciated. |
I have been playing with my EVO Droid all day this thing is awesome.
|
just saying that the 4G network currently is very limited in it's availability and it's gonna hinder it. It's the latest gadget and the latest great phone. Albeit a 2 hour battery life and all. I love Android and think it's great.
I'm also not biased enough to think that Apple is the one and only phone. And yes, the iPhone 4.0 will be discussed on Monday and the phone talked about according to every gadget blog (Engadget/Gizmodo/Techcrunch/Cnet) etc... The Sprint network is a 3rd tier network and this is needed to build subscribers to its network. Look at their latest numbers and see how many people they lose per quarter due to their customer service and coverage. I saw the phone. It's nice and bright and big. It's a catcher but you need 2 batteries to last the day but maybe they'll address it with a fix. The LA area will see 4G at the end of '10 and we'll see how fast it gets. I'm not thrilled with AT&T coverage or it's 3G network. HSDPA is supposed to be built out on their network and maybe see for increased speeds and reliability. Not a fanboy, but a tech lover. Congrats on your phone. |

And the Evo 4G isn't out in the UK, so you haven't held it. |

Ian, did you know your .co.uk is not 3rd, 4th or 5th in web search, its fluctuating. It should be 2nd considering the actual name of the url, is what you are searching. I notice Natalie's blog & our banners page fluctuates also in 3rd, 4th & 5th place also :1orglaugh I do not ask everyone to hit my page just to get it higher on google neither :winkwink: |

The Evo is a totally new phone, it is not out in the UK, you have not held it nor heard of it. You have no opinion on it. Bless you for trying to join in with the big boys' chat though. It's sweet. |

Congrats. I'm a Droid convert. That's tough to say because I'm a mac addict and previous iphone user. I have a powerbook, an imac, had an iphone and even own an original 128KB RAM mac that I still use for running statistics! I should'nt have to jailbreak an iphone to get the functionality of what droid can give you right out of the box.

So on point. lol Quote:
I had a blackberry and loved it. Nothing was wrong with it and it worked great. Just wanted to try something different. This droid phone is pretty good and has given me hours of entertainment. GFY looks really cool on it too. Played with it for 2 days already. does so much.:2 cents: |

A wimpy battery is a deal killer for me.

Quote:
If you disable the vibrating touch pad, turn your screen brightness down, turn off the 4G, Wifi, bluetooth and turn apps off that you are not using, the battery is a zero issue. Just sayen. But if you are like me and you like all of the bells and whistles, just keep extra chargers around. So you can have the best of both worlds. Bigger battery=bigger phone. Would not want it any bigger than it is.:2 cents: |

It is quite simple, you stupidly thought that a person can try a fiesta & then state they do not like a mustang??? WTF :error I do not like fords nor do I like HTC or motorola phones. I think Blackberrys are ok but I certainly do not like the layout of them. My opinion. Quote:

You either say the EVO is a boring looking phone, or HTCs are boring looking phones. |
Quote:
Oh, may I also say, I am not stating the EVO on its own. I do not personally like the HTC phones of which I have held one & did not like it. I suppose, like once you have drove a car & then do not wish to drive that make any more or maybe you do not like a MAC & yet the new MAC could be perfect for a person. Its my own opinion of which I just do not like HTC.... Hoping this is ok with you. |
Quote:
The HTC you held has NOTHING in common with this one. Not the software, not the hardware, not the layout... The HTC EVO is a Google Android Phone. If anything you could say you don't like Android. Unless, you are talking purely emotional brand appeal, but if so, what is the point? |

The Cosworth Fords are not boring. You have never driven one. The Mustang is not boring. You have no idea, because you have never driven one. You have NO IDEA what the Evo is like, because it is not out in the UK, you have not touched one and you have no idea what it does. So to offer your opinion on the new HTC phone based on an old one you claim you have touched is really really really fucking stupid. Quote:
Although I am sure your expert opinion on a phone you didn't even know wasn't coming out in the UK will help people in America make purchasing decisions. Quote:
You have no idea what an Evo is. You haven't held one and you seem to not realise that Ford make Mustangs. But I *love* you wearing your stupidity on your sleeve like it is something you are proud of. Well done. xxx |
Quote:
He hasn't seen the Evo. He thinks HTC is a model, not a make. He is really, really stupid. Don't waste your time with him. |
