Amputate Your Head 06-16-2010 06:21 PM

I was going to, but it says it's from the future...

"This article originally appeared in RS 1107 from June 24, 2010."

and so I got scared. :party-smi

Sadly...I am not suprised by this. Everything that comes out of Obama's mouth is a lie.
He promises and then fails to deliver. That is not change we can believe in.
He can't manage, he can travel the country on our dime and make great speeches, but he is no leader.

Agent 488 06-16-2010 06:33 PM

clff notes.

Agent 488 06-16-2010 06:34 PM

Extreme mismanagement and incompetence. In the real world you would have fired every swinging dick that was remotely involved.

i was trying to figure out a way to do that but the article is really jammed full of information, it's truly amazing what happened, as it's outlined.

I am wrapping up page 1 now and all I can say is wow, what a read! Great find!

epitome 06-16-2010 06:49 PM

Not surprising:

Quote:

Even worse, the "moratorium" on drilling announced by the president does little to prevent future disasters. The ban halts exploratory drilling at only 33 deepwater operations, shutting down less than one percent of the total wells in the Gulf. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, the Cabinet-level official appointed by Obama to rein in the oil industry, boasts that "the moratorium is not a moratorium that will affect production" – which continues at 5,106 wells in the Gulf, including 591 in deep water.

Most troubling of all, the government has allowed BP to continue deep-sea production at its Atlantis rig – one of the world's largest oil platforms. Capable of drawing 200,000 barrels a day from the seafloor, Atlantis is located only 150 miles off the coast of Louisiana, in waters nearly 2,000 feet deeper than BP drilled at Deepwater Horizon. According to congressional documents, the platform lacks required engineering certification for as much as 90 percent of its subsea components – a flaw that internal BP documents reveal could lead to "catastrophic" errors. In a May 19th letter to Salazar, 26 congressmen called for the rig to be shut down immediately. "We are very concerned," they wrote, "that the tragedy at Deepwater Horizon could foreshadow an accident at BP Atlantis."

I'll throw it on the reading stack for tonight.

What good is regulation when they give waivers in exchange for payoffs? There needs to be some serious oversite/reporting on that department.

epitome 06-16-2010 07:19 PM

Finished the great article. It leaves me with a big question... With the Obama administration publicly underestimating the daily spill amounts, how will we accurately fine them up to $4,200 per barrel spilled under the Clean Water Act?

psili 06-16-2010 07:46 PM

Ken Salazar and the MMS were sure mentioned a lot, as well as the Bush administration. Also, that Obama tried to leverage oil drilling for climate legislation. I see this more of a view into how fucked up our entire government is rather than pointing a finger at a particular individual.

And since I found Obama to be the least shitty of choices between the ones we had (which is why I voted for him), I now feel less likely to ever vote again, because even the least shitty of choices for a government official is still shitty.

Look at all the shit he inherited. I feel bad for the guy.

At least he didn't attack and invade another country for no reason.
At least he didn't steal the election.
At least he's not a complete idiot like GWB.

From our point of view, Obama's doing an amazing job, especially considering all the endless amount of bullshit he seems to have to put up with every day. Cut the man some slack.

It's Bush's fault.

"President Obama pushed to expand offshore drilling, in part, to win votes for climate legislation, which remains blocked in the Senate. The political calculus is understandable – the risk of an oil spill weighed against the far greater threat posed by global warming – but in the end, he may have succeeded only in compounding one environmental catastrophe with another." Convenient eh?

"There’s a problem: BP was a founding member of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a lobby dedicated to passing a cap-and-trade bill. As the nation’s largest producer of natural gas, BP saw many ways to profit from climate legislation, notably by persuading Congress to provide subsidies to coal-fired power plants that switched to gas."

but

Now they get to tax an element of all life..

"And now the devil is gloating."

And that devil is Obama.

"Gulf was preceded by ample warnings – yet the administration had ignored them" - that is unfortunate.

dyna mo 06-17-2010 08:04 AM

hoping more peeps will read this article.

TheDoc 06-17-2010 08:22 AM

Great article....

"If" nothing had happened and Obama went to regulate the Oil Industry, the "republicans" would be screaming that Obama is screwing up the free markets regulating everything. IE: Drill baby drill, the industry will regulate itself and nothing else make a shit...

Now that he has no choice, he isn't regulating fast enough and it's nice to see that he actually did respond, within hours of it happening.

Hopefully now this means super regulations are coming and we can finally smack Americans in the face and get them to seek alternative fuel solutions.

DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE???

"From our point of view".... who are you speaking for??? Clearly you are not someone living near the gulf.... what has happened with this spill will far exceed the impact of Katrina. Do you speak for the millions of out of work whom were promised work by Obama? From which point of view do you speak, because I can't find anything about the job Obama has done I would say was amazing in a positive way. Both domestically and internationally he seems to be a big fat zero. Please enlighten me, because I too was in the camp of "anyone but GW". Now, I am beginning believe the only "change" that occurred was we have a president with a better tan and can read multi-syllabic phrases from a teleprompter. Not the change I wanted.

Makes me fucking sick. This country is so corrupt and inept, it is unbelievable anything works right. And amazingly, no one who works or worked at the MMS or BP will spend a night in jail over this.

I'd take each one of those people who had anything to do with these failures of oversight, permitting, etc, build a giant tank and fill it full of water and oil. Then I'd throw the fuckers in one at a time, and let the people waiting their turn watch the others drown in horror. I'd remind each one that countless birds had suffered the same fate, so suck it up and die like a man. Videotape that shit and you'd have the best selling video of the year. And yet, if I did this, I'd be the one convicted of a crime. Amazing!
