US Government Affirms: All Domains Belong to Us

Torrentfreak isn't the most reliable source. But this has some pretty big implications online. I guess now we know why they didn't want to give up control of ICANN. Have to wonder how other countries feel about this. Considering it doesn't only apply to .com, .org, etc. Beyond the short term targets, you'd have to imagine it has dangerous implications for the future. |
Gotta be kidding me, they think they can do whatever the fuck they want. This is outrageous. I still remember the Bodog clusterfuck.

Honestly, I can't believe this is getting by with hardly a whimper. I remember years ago there was a massive fuss about pushing ICANN into UN control. Now the EU, etc seem pretty quite to me? Sure, this time, they targeted something they might agree upon. But the precedent set by this surely is a huge huge deal.

How about the rest of the world throws in 10 Billion and then we start giving them a piece? No going to happen? Well, then they can go fuck themselves!

This is what I've been trying to say.
But since the US really did invent and create the Internet, the organizational infrastructure is still under their control. They are in the proverbial catbird seat. In the past they've taken a low profile, but with so much tax dollars lost in commercial revenue you can expect this sort of thing to continue, and probably expand. Whether the UN or EU or anyone else balks depends on whether they are willing to admit that it's okay to use the Internet for illegal activity. Not likely to happen as long as the domain seizures are clear cut. |
