How well does paying for SEO work pay off?
For example: I have a 3 year old site/domain, it's a 3 word keyword (looks-like-this.com) that gets ~1,000 daily Google type ins, I want to get top listing for it and lookslikethis.com isn't up there. How much time/money would it take to get a top listing and does that SEO shit even really work?

lots of factors... not enough info...

i paid 2500.00 to someone i know who does organic seo on my mainstream design website
got me first page results for several terms last year i landed 2 clients who's net to the company was over 40k combined. this year several smaller clients well worth the investment for me |
SEO is definitely an option, but it totally depends on your keyphrase, competition, etc.
On a side note: 3 year old domain is a plus in my book. But whatever you do, don't believe anybody telling you "i'll get you the #1 spot in xx weeks". |
Well who is a reliable company / person to goto about this? And could they give me a quote on the time/money it would take to achieve what I'm looking for? Before having to spend anything of course. It's honestly not a busy keyword and I'm suprised I haven't even made first page results yet let alone top listing.. if I put the keyword into "quotes" it only comes up with 34,000 listings.

if the top spot isn't an authority site its worth trying especially if having #1 for that term will generate you a lot of money. Being #1 for a term isn't always the post profitable position. Of course being 1,2,3,4 and 5 isn't bad either.

For a 3 term search phrase... I would say $900 and 3 weeks.
