lol, yes, but you know some superstitious people (gamblers) get ruined because of it. They have a "lucky" coin or something and if they succeed others start to believe. In the end someone will the lottery, but most will not. If the octopus was wrong from the beginning, it wouldn't get any attention, but maybe another "monkey" would :)

I read the total odds from the octopus guess was slightly over 400. Enough to win a nice amount, but FAR from what some others win every day.

octopi are considered to have at least a dog's intelligence, so they are quite aware.

they only let him predict the german games and the final - he got 8 out of 8 correct. so he's definitely smarter - or more lucky - than the rest of us. :winkwink:

With 2^N it will take 256 "predicting" monkeys to flip a coin 8 times, where 1 will statistically "predict" right. That monkey will get the attention and it's NOT his intelligence that brought him there :)

i don't think psychic ability is intelligence per se, its just another opened doorway in the brain.

but the octopus is aware of his surroundings and if extra-sensory perception exists (which is likely) he would qualify as a psychic cephalopod.

you must admit that the odds of one octopus making 8 accurate "guesses" in a row is pretty incredible.

If the odds for winning in each game (a coin flip) is 2, then the odds of guessing all correct is 256. The odds for guessing WRONG in a 8 row is also 256.
If 6 billion people, monkeys or squids took the same wild guess, then over 23 million will guess correctly and the same amount will guess all wrong.

I'm not saying the octopus doesn't have intelligence, just that a guess like that has nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, I believe the octopus liked the colors of the german flag and that's what he sticked to. And lucky for him, Germany tends to improve throughout these games. He didn't "know" that and if we flipped the flags and "told" him, he wouldn't understand it ... and guess all wrong. That's not incredible intelligence or "zero" intelligence, it's just plain math :)

No, the ones offering gambling are truly the genius ones. They will always bank because the odds are designed to pay out less than 100%. They make money of hopes and dreams, it's a genius scam and even legal! If I create a flip coin game and promise to pay you 199% on 1 flip if you guess right, will you listen to Paul? How much money and how many games will it take, before you do the math? I will win in the end, I can "predict" and promise you that :)

Not true. You cannot prove that Paul is not psychic, you can use math to demonstrate a possibility, or even a probability, but you have no evidence to show that the octopus is not using psychic powers.

And the idea that gambling exists doesn't prove anything about psychic abilities. It only proves that probably 99.9 percent of the people in this world are not psychic, and therefore "gamble."

I don't really think that psychic abilities are that mysterious either. Imagine a brain that could filter all present and past factors in a given situation and accurately predict the outcome of something based upon that information. Sound familiar? hehe...

Are you sure that Paul isn't a football expert? Perhaps he's been absorbing information via the TV's in the bar for the last 2 years and his conclusions are based upon this accumulated data. We are not talking rocket science here, its just another sport, of which most are quite easy to comprehend, even for a mollusk:winkwink:
