dum dum dum another one bites the dust - say goodbye to Ounique

sad, they were very big licensed content sellers/brokers. and now they have shut their doors. au revoir Ounique even though I never knew how to pronounce your friggin' name!

Dear Photographers,

Ounique.com will be closing on August 31, 2010. We have appreciated
working with you over the years; however the decline in sales no
longer makes the company viable.

As of yesterday, July 19, 2010, we are not accepting any new orders
from clients, so we can keep all of our accounting in order and make
sure you are paid your final royalty payments.

You have until August 31, 2010 to look up your final stats online.
Sept 1, 2010 the website will be closed.

We will be issuing all final checks shortly for April 2010 - July 19, 2010.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you for the email and have a stylish day.
-Gregory :-)

I didn't realize they were still in business. Haven't heard of them in years. I bought a bunch of content from them way back when.

TheSenator 07-20-2010 03:11 PM

Who???

Never heard of them before...

Any famous photos from them?

good for the rest of us i guess

Loch 07-20-2010 03:15 PM

The fact that most people do not know about them anymore most likely is why they have to shut down.
In all honesty i thought they shut the doors years ago myself.

sortie 07-20-2010 03:15 PM

PS: fuck them Mutt!

You have a camera and you make product; just reach out to more avenues.

Fuck them; they can't control how far you can go with your talent.

Maybe you just got too comfortable with them because it was so easy to get a
check.

Calico Jack 07-20-2010 03:15 PM

Lastt time I bought content from them must have been 3 if not 4 years ago. Didn't the original owner sell it, then the new owner simply stopped adding new stuff? From a buyers perspective, that's how it seemed.

SleazyDream 07-20-2010 03:21 PM

i used to buy a lot from them

Rochard 07-20-2010 03:22 PM

Haven't heard from them in a long, long time.....

You would think they would be banging out money right now - Lots of wannabee photographers and lots of broke webmasters looking for content.

$5 submissions 07-20-2010 03:25 PM

How many closure reports is the industry averaging per month now?

AFSC 07-20-2010 03:27 PM

Wow, too bad! First Matrix, now Ounique! Sorry to see.

Real bad time to be a broker

Great to be a well placed content company if you own your stock and have money to invest in not only your own productions, but buy from others as well.

No you are not, be honest :2 cents:

AquariusPhotos 07-20-2010 03:33 PM

They stopped adding new content years ago and stopped marketing the site. They still ran the site taking orders. Finally sales have dwindled to nothing so the site is closed. They died years ago. This is not new news and has nothing to do with the recent recession.

selena 07-20-2010 03:36 PM

I didn't use sponsor content when I started, and bought nearly all my stuff from them or David Lace.

And agreed on what others are saying. Last time I was at their site, the content had not been updated in what had to have been years.

kristin 07-20-2010 03:42 PM

Wow I haven't heard that name in years!

NaughtyRob 07-20-2010 03:45 PM

I thought they closed up years ago.

SomeCreep 07-20-2010 03:45 PM

Wow, they've been around forever. It's amazing to see what's happening to this industry. Right before our very eyes, it's all crumbling to dust.

PurrrsianPussyKat 07-20-2010 03:47 PM

Bought a lot of stuff from them back in the day..

marcop 07-20-2010 04:07 PM

I got a check from them several months ago. But I found a check in early 2009 from them that I hadn't cashed and which was out of date, and I couldn't get anyone to reply to emails, and the phone numbers didn't work. I made a lot of money with them from '99 to '06 or so.

SykkBoy 07-20-2010 04:19 PM

I spent a LOT of money with them back in the day, but, yeah, the new owner hadn't updated in a long time...most of their content was filler quality, especially about the last time I bought anything from them and that's a really tough market to be in these days.

rowan 07-20-2010 08:40 PM

It may have been on its last legs but doesn't "As of yesterday, July 19, 2010, we are not accepting any new orders" suggest that it's another "fuck it, we can't survive, let's just end it RIGHT NOW" kinda thing? That sort of shit leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

amateurcanada 07-20-2010 08:59 PM

I've used them for filler stuff as well as web-legal! Aww :)

David Lace... that name is a blast from the past. I interviewed with him in '98 or '99 with an eye to working for him, but it didn't pan out. I first met Dean Capture in Lace's Culver City studio a few years later. Dean was retouching and assisting, if I remember correctly.

How the world has changed since then . . . .

I think if there were enough people that cared about when they stopped accepting new orders, they probably would not be shutting their doors. :2 cents:

Are they inconveniencing you? Probably no one else either.

:) I guess it's not quite the same as a program keeping paysites up while "notifying" affiliates that they'll no longer be paid, but the email does say "As of yesterday, July 19, 2010, we are not accepting any new orders from clients"

If they'd had a closing down sale rather than abruptly ceasing orders they probably could have made a bit of $$$ on the way out.

Too bad. I bought a good bit of content from them back in the day.

Pics Traffic 07-21-2010 12:03 AM

One of the first stores I ever used to buy content. Sad news.
