The 17-year-old wanted to do something different for his upcoming graduation from Carpinteria High School. So he went to court last week to legally change his name from Peter Eastman, Jr. to Trout Fishing in America. Trout said he decided to change his name to break away from tradition. I am just saying I am not this little kid anymore. I want to be my own person.

The name was inspired by Richard Brautiganýs 1967 counterculture classic, Trout Fishing in America. I really like the book,ý Trout said. He looks at the world in a way I like.ý

Peter Eastman, Sr. said he supports his sonýs decision, but said he was sad that the family torch has been passed to fish. Still, the senior Eastman paid the $182 name-change filing fee as a graduation present for his son. It should become official in a couple of weeks and the name Trout Fishing in America should appear on his diploma in June.

I remember a local radio station having a contest for people to call in with their REAL names that were embarrassing. The girl who won was named Crystal Shan deLier. Joe Dirt is better, though :)
