compressing avi files without losing quality?

I have a bunch of videos from my canon powershot but the files are so huge, are there any free programs out there that will compress them without losing video/sound quality?

hummm... doesn't the term 'compression' implicitly imply quality loss?

you would think so but my camcorder makes even better quality videos at a much smaller size, so..

it's about the capture then, the quality of the cmos and what is 'gathered' not the size of the file. the powershot pulls lot's off low quailty data.

...and the codec used for compression.

You could try crush it down by re-encoding in Handbrake. Or pull it into Final Cut and edit it down.

Use WMV.

That's all I have to say about this.

im sure it gets compressed on their side but in the meantime i have to upload 700megs. the upload on my isp is pretty slow as it is but uploading to youtube is brutal.

I believe the compression is only done server side.

BlackCrayon 08-07-2010 08:54 AM

youtube needs to make it so you can resume your uploads. it always fails part way through on the big files for me.

crazytrini85 08-07-2010 08:56 AM

encode it to a high bit rate mp4.
