Hi, im looking to encode some HD videos for online viewing. I currently have adobe media encoder, does anyone know what settings I should use? I would still like to keep the videos in HD.

Thanks

I can't tell you with Adobe, but what I use on another program is a 2 pass average bit rate of around 1200. Sometimes I can squeeze it down to 800 but if there is a lot of movement I need it higher. Less movement and I can squeeze it down. You really have to play with it and see what works best for your footage. Of course you can go way up around 3000 and have very large but crystal clear files. Or encode for both and detect the users speed and give them the version that is best for them.

After you encode it you want to change the moov atom. A few free software options to do this, its quick and painless.

Most people get this wrong and keep using the main or baseline profile, which for HD will suck up so much CPU anyone with a marginal PC (Pentium III, G4 Mac, etc.) won't be able to view the video without problems. Be sure to select High Profile.

Same as when encoding FLVs using VP6 codec, you'd pick VP6-S. S means standard but in a twist of logic, that's the one for HD. The (E)nhanced profile is for standard def.

good "gotchas" right there for most people.

If you want smooth ONLINE streaming you better forget about fullHD.
stick to 720 with 3-4mbps bitrate

Hi, thanks for the info. I have a question for you regrading the high profile, as I am just in the process of learning the encoding for HD video. If I want my videos to work on Iphone/Ipad/other mobile HD devices, then they can't be done in High Profile, correct? Is it best to have tons of different files that work with differnt phones ( those that work with baseline or main, and those that will work with high profile?
