One thing for sure is that the music industry is going to beef up any artist that
they promote so all musical acts are "above their level" in a studio recording.

Old school music is full of three member bands that on the released records
you hear 2 guitars, one bass, drummer, 3 violins, 2 cellos, piano, 2 trumpets and
tympani drums. The lead singer also simultaneously sings back up too.

I heard that Ringo Star never actually played drums on the Beatles recordings and
they used a studio drummer. Don't know if it's true, but It would not be unusual.
